Yo!

I recently bought this bike and it's a 2007 Hyosung GT250R, it seems to ride fine, but it has this constant rattling noise which seems to be coming from the engine...

Anyone knows what is causing the noise and if it's a big problem?

Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGgNLs4DCKQ

Thanks!

Hi !
Thanks for getting back to me!

I didn't find any piston rings, and i got the bike for $1300.
I don't plan on riding it hard, just to cruise around SF City.

=/ A friend of mine came and checked out the bike today, he also spotted that my rear brake disc is basically "gone" as the surface has been grinded against the bolts. lol damn!
But he also said that the sound seems to be a loose bolt or valve, not a big problem.

I did take it to SF Moto, one of the guys said it's good to go, whereas the other said i should leave it there for a thorough check up. I don't want to be tricked into spending a LOT of money for some potential small issues, (maybe big.. i don't know) So i rode it home first! (SF Moto fixed the handle bar, mirror and installed a new indicator. Those 3 components were broken when the Ex-owner dropped it right before my very eyes! But the bike seems to ride very well and i dont think i noticed the noise when the ex-owner showed up)

Like i said, i got the bike for cheap.. How much are we talking about to fix the problems and is it worth it? I only plan on keeping this bike no more than 6 months.

Some suggested me to take a course "Introduction to Motorcycle", the course teaches a lot of maintenance knowledge, spotting the issues and identify any unusual noises.

Have you guys taken it? The contents seem just like what i should know being a beginner rider!

Thanks,
Roland

P.S i work full time, but am dead bored in the weekends (apart from attending Church), so i was thinking of buying adequate tools and just play around/fix it and learn from a simple 250cc bike? (i was told these small bikes are very simple, difficult to go really wrong.. )

For the price it sounds like the perfect bike for around town. If you plan on any longer out of town rides it would be worth fixing the rear brake and other known issues.

How much to fix depends on what items you identify as problematic. Rear brake pads are $35. The gouged up rear brake rotor is pricey maybe $150 or more.

There shouldn't even be a question whether or not to fix the brakes. You shouldn't ride it until they're in good working order, even if it's just the rear.

I'm gonna make an educated guess and say someone tried to adjust the valves and did it wrong.. and the smoke is oil burning, more than likely from the valves being burned and jacked up from the valves being tight.

Now that they're "adjusted' oil is leaking past the valve stem seals.. a lot of oil.. :laughing

$1300 eh? You got, um, a bike.. :)

Haha XD bought some brake fluid from cycle gear today cause i think the brake fluid is also empty on my bike lol

Looks like i spent $1300 on a "bicycle" that is heavy and has no pedals on it.. Well at least it looks cool XP

NEXT time i buy a bike, i'm going to post a thread FIRST, asking if any of you from BARF will be in that area to help me out with examining the bike >X]

Most of the smoke is coming out when the bike is revving up, not while revving down when there is vacuum in the cylinders pulling oil past the rings, so your theory works for me. Hopefully its on the exhaust side. Have you checked the plugs?

Not a bad idea. Or meet the seller at a trusted shop and pay them for their inspection :thumbup

If you can get that heap to me I'll check it out and diagnose it for you for FREE--> cause you got burned on this one pretty good dude..

Yeah, I'll help you out.
