Question for ya:

Do you ride with your wedding ring on? I've recently joined the ranks and I've heard that in an accident scene, they will cut off jewelry rather than remove it. I'm probably overthinking this, I couldn't find any threads on the subject, but I'm curious how the general riding community handles it.

Cheers,
Steve

Hmm!

Never heard of this.

not sure about that. I know mechanics dont wear the rings because it can get caught in engines.

No. Nothing to do with riding though. I hardly ever wear it. Neither does my wife. Every once in a while she'll put hers on, hand me mine and say "Hey, let's be married tonight!" :laughing

My guess is that medics will do what's fastest and easiest for them. They are trying to save your life, and time matters more than jewelry does. If they need jewelry out of the way and cutting it off is quickest, they'll cut it off. I'm not sure that cutting a ring off would be qiucker than just pulling it off. I'm also not sure that field medics would actually need to get a ring off. Once you get to the hospital though, they may want it off if you get an MRI or CT scan, which is pretty common in trauma cases. Even then, I'm not sure how big a deal a wedding band really is; most wedding bands are non-ferrous metals.

It has been recommended to me to take off all rings while racing. It would be very unusual, but your finger could get crushed if the ring is squashed in an accident. Then you lose the finger.

Another recommendation is not to chew gum, because if you get knocked-out, you could choke to death before anyone can clear it out.

thought you were gonna say " the jewelry will cut off your finger in an accident" kinda scared me a bit lol. but no never heard of them cutting off jewelry before and i always ride with mine on.

Myth. Lot's of mechanics wear wedding bands. You probably won't find many wearing long necklaces, but even lots of them wear necklaces.

Plus... "getting caught in engines" really!?! If you tried, you might be able to get a necklace caught in a belt. The accessory drives are the only thing that moves on the outside of an engine.

I didn't like wearing my ring just because there are a billion ways to get that little spot on the bottom side of your finger pinched. I don't think any of those reasons were about getting my ring caught in an engine though. :rofl

"They cut off my wedding ring, and you started to cry/my one-eyed Niagra Falls man."

I wear it all the time. I'd lose it otherwise. If it has to be cut off at some point, c'est la vie.

(I wanted one without anything sticking out, since it would interfere with moto gloves, lab gloves, and clothes in general, so m'boy had a diamond inset into the tungsten ring I chose. Doesn't catch in anything. :love)

I could understand women not wearing it but for a guy, unless it's gaudy and doesn't fit under your gloves, why not wear it? :dunno

I wear mine... will remove for a trackday and that is about it.

I usually have a bracelet on as well, but those are the bend to fit type and have no latch. I gave up wearing a watch ever because I always broke or damage them.

Besides Peter Fonda said real bikers don't wear watches.. :laughing

The big blinging diamond ring.. I don't wear..:p

It never comes off.

I've seen pics of someone who got a ring caught on a fence top while climbing over, and it peeled the skin right off the bone.

Got it sewed back on...bet that's a fun story at parties. I'll post a link if I can find the pics.

Here is one, don't click if you're squeamish, it's not pretty: http://www.ispub.com/ispub/ijos/vol...nd_don_ts_of_initial_management/ring-fig1.jpg

Ya', man. That Fonda is a a rockin'-radical-rake-racer. :laughing

And quit showing off. Some of us sold off our pinky rings with our disco platform shoes and bell bottom pants. :x

If you have a finger injury that requires removal of your wedding ring, it will usually be cut off. Removing the ring without cutting it may be difficult or impossible due to swelling and can pose a high risk of further injury to a damaged finger.

I doubt that EMTs just go around cutting off jewelry, however.

I always wear mine.

If I am in an accident that cutting the ring off is necessary, a damaged ring would be the least of my worries.

I'm more worried about the finger.

I liked Budman's suggestion, I'll probably take it off when riding for sport and leave it on otherwise. Thanks for the feedback all!
