My RF1000 is pretty scratched up after 5yrs use and I've been noticing that newer helmets, RF1100 and 1200, have more viewing area than the older ones. So after a little homework I bought a CL-17 and used it this morning, very impressed! It is only a tick less comfortable, which should improve after break-in, better peripheral vision and more viewing area. The venting system seems to actually work better than the Shoei and over-all the helmet is quieter than the 5yo RF1000. So I guess I have a $125 head after all.

Thanks for that.

In the past 10 years I've had a series of Shoeis and really liked my RF900 and RF1000. But the RF1100 is inferior to the previous ones. More wind noise (I still have a 1000 for a direct comparison) and some fit-and-finish issues (cheek pads pop out when I take the helmet off).

I'll give the HJC a try.

Just got one myself; excellent quality especially for the money.

I've owned three HJC-16's - I love them for the cost but on ALL three the visor clip-in mechanism eventually failed -and I'm not hard on my helmets at all. It's fixable for a while but eventually opening and closing your visor won't happen without popping the shield out of place. Maybe the 17 is better? But the picture shows the same clip-in setup.

All in all a good buy- I've just learned to view it as a disposable helmet (vs my AGV GP Tech).

One of my helmets is an HJC and I like it quite a bit. Excellent bang for the buck, and has done surprisingly well in testing.

Yep, it was my first helmet, primarily chosen because it was cheap and SNELL tested/approved.

I have an IS-17, which has 5 stars on the Sharp Report (my go-to source for helmet reviews). Not bad, seeing as how I paid $110 for it. :thumbup

I hated my hjc. Visor mechanism failed, terrible venting, paint flaked off for no reason and the mirrored visor was trash within a couple months.

Did you take it back to the vendor & get a refund/swap?

Yeah, I replaced my CL-16 after the visor broke off on one side right before my commute home. I stopped by a Cycle Gear and they fixed it for free (new screws) but the visor would get jammed so often that it'd break the screws off, so I got a Shoei instead. The CL-16 was a decent helmet and extremely comfortable but it was SO loud and didn't have speaker pockets for headsets (though to be fair it's an old helmet). I still have it as a backup/loaner/car helmet though.

I have at least a handful of HJC helmets. I thought I was an HJC-man until I tried on a Suomy, and now I'm a Suomy-man. Still, I've had nothing but good experience in ownership of HJC helmets.

No. I got it from a friend for cheap that gave up riding after one ride. Didnt bother. Had other helmets.

RF1200 is great. Massive step forwards from the RF1000

Tried the HJC stuff, it just doesn't seem to fit my head.

Thanks for that.

Im glad I'm not the only one. It's ridiculous. I bought new cheek pads that were thinner so they grabbed less ear and the Shoei quality and fit just was t there. Still quiet as hell though, so I fight it on and off every ride.

I liked my garage sale find HJC and it crashed well. Thanks for plug OP.

Finally rode with my new CL17.

Snug fit but no pressure points and unlike a couple of people I thought the venting was great, (100 degree day), and it might just be the quietest helmet I've ever owned, (several Arais, a Shuberth and a ZR1).

The helmet detents are quite abrupt so will keep an eye on the mounting points in case I run into visor mount issues like others have mentioned.

I just bought one yesterday. I have a round head so it's really difficult for me to find a nice fitting helmet. A good fitting helmet will be a very quiet helmet. Just keep in mind of the 3 year warranty if it ever falls apart

I miss my old OGK FF3/FF4 whatever it was called, it had one of the best and most simple visor mechanisms ever.

OGK is still around, they're called Kabuto now (iirc). Scuderia carries them.

I've had an HJC before. What's their shield base plate like now? They were so crappy, that I never would have traveled with it without two, complete, replacement mechanisms. For real.
