Homeopathic help for a sick kitten? (my little buddy alexander) (bumped 8/28/13)

if all else fails, you dont have to say bye-bye to kitty. if done properly, the pelt can easily be converted into a fashionable womens all season purse.

(J/K im sending all the positive karma i have in kittys direction)

Sorry but I think that comment is in poor taste, even if you are just kidding. Someone is upset about possibly losing their pet and I can't see how that would be funny to a person in that situation.

Dave, you have given Alexander a better home, longer life and much more happiness than what he started with. I feel that, with terminal illnesses, it is more humane to let them go than to keep them around, well medicated and in pain to please their owner for longer than is natural.

You will make the best decision for him when the time is right. It will be hard for a while, and hopefully you can put your love for Alexander into another wonderful kitten's life.

Dave,

I have tears in my eyes as I type this. I have been through care for a cat with FIP. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever been through with a critter. I know what you are going through. IF kitty starts showing signs of pain, please make sure it gets pain relief. This disease really sucks, and personally I would let the cat go before he suffers to much.

Little Joe, my friend's little guy, went downhill very rapidly. I was helping with his care. At one point, we had to force feed him, plus give sub-cutaneous fluids. After 2 days of that, it was too much. It was not fair for the cat, and too hard on us. He was put down shortly after that.

If you have other questions, please let me know. If you are still interested in alternative treatments, there is a vet is Sebastopol that does alternative and traditional care, including acupuncture for animals. I can get the address for you if you want.

Here's hoping it is not FIP. Sending healing thoughts to you and your little guy.

And thanks for rescuing a kitty like him. I'm allergic to cats, otherwise I would have a couple of them, all rescues.

Don't worry, we have no plans to try to force things if he isn't comfortable.

The person in Sebastapol isn't Dr Pesch is it? (My Fiancee kind of grew up in that area, her parents still live up there).

Yup, it is Dr. Lisa Pesch. DVM

Vetrinary Healing Arts Center on Main Street

I live about 10 minutes from the place. I have heard wonderful things about their clinic. My friend who is doing hospice care for her dog goes there.

Janelle put it in a more philosophical light for me yesterday.

We rescued this little guy from a cage at the ACC. There is nothing we could do to stop him from getting this, and probably nothing we can do to cure him. What we HAVE done, is to give him a couple months of happiness, warm bed, loving family, good food, a house to call his own and other cats to play with. Black cats aren't adopted as readily, so chances are good that he might have died right where he was, all alone, in a cage, on the second floor of a building that didn't have soft carpet for him to roll around on.

Yup, she hit the nail on the head.

And what a damn shame about black cats. I think they have the best personality out of any cats.

Dave I am hoping that your little kitty is feeling good tonight and is comfy, purring and well fed. If/when the time comes there are also people who will come to your home and put the kitty down while you are present. Personally, I hope that when/if my end comes I can experience the same comforting departure. My heart and thoughts are with you and yours.

dave, i pm'ed you.

i wrote my friend and she wrote back, she can spare a vial. it is called feline omega interferon and is from the UK, not approved for use in the US yet, but it can cure FIP in up to 30% of the cats that take it.

i hope this helps alexander and brings him back to greatness.

here is some more info on it: http://www.dr-addie.com/treatment.htm

i use lysine in general with my cats if they get kitty colds to boost the immune system.

Thanks Melissa, George had a good idea, put little alex in my avatar, just to get good thoughts his way. Alex had a couple syringes of food, and is having a staring contest with the older cat.

Talking with the GF now about this...thanks so much..

The problem right now is that using something to boost the immune response might actually make things WORSE for the poor guy, as his body would attack itself even faster. :(

my gf had a kitten with FIP... it was awful. she tried everything, and spent like $2,000 in vet bills for tests and x-rays and such. sophia (the kitten) got bloated, her stomach filling with some kind of liquid, she became lethargic and eventually stopped eating. we were discussing plans to take her to the vet and have her euthanized... when we came home and found her already dead.

my best advice would be to prepare yourself for the worst. FIP is some terrible shit.

Oh man Dave, I saw him in your avvie, already feared the worst....

a 30% chance isn't much, but you gotta figure, its a big chance of advancing the inevitable, with a slim upshot of staving it off, perhaps completely. I can't tell you what to do because I don't know where your heart is, but were it me, I'd go for it - but that's just because I hat e the days of thinking "will today be our last together?" - to me that's almost worse then them being gone.

My hopes are with you guys. Little Alex looks like a fighter to me. :thumbup

actually, lysine works with it nutritionally, but that is mainly to ward off infections and virius like the 'cat cold'. you could try a vitamin supplement from missing link, you can get it at any pet store, by mixing it in with a high quality wet food and corticosteroids, to make sure he eats and gets the proper nutrition in case he was misdiagnosed, which is common. i give my cats raw chicken with it. there is a food called primal you can get a whole foods that is also raw and can be mixed with it, but with the raw chicken or semi-cooked fish, you know they will eat it.

the problems with corticosteroids is that they cause the body to not produce as much cortisone from the adrenal glands and may deplete or interfere with nutritional absorption, so a high protein supplemented diet is recommended. ideally, you want him to produce enough of the natural hormone cortisone to put things in check.

Was talking with Janelle about this briefly last night.

I adopted one of my (much-loved) brats from the ACC. The conditions are not good. Emma turned out to have a diaphragmatic hernia, and needed over $2,000 of surgery (luckily successful).

The vet told us that if the ACC had known, she would have been put down, rather than spend the money. And I'm sure that is the case for your sweetheart too. As rough as it is to love and lose, you gave a cat a great, loving home, and a good life, however long or short that might be. Infinitely better than the alternative.

My thoughts and sympathy are with you.

i have magic fucking powers but i dont see how that would help your cat.

your girlfriend maybe.
