Honda announces CRF450L

Also i have read it holds 1.8L of oil so 600 just seems excessive. Why so frequent for a detuned motor?
A detuned motor with relatively high oil capacity. If I bought one and the Honda recommendation was still 600 miles, I'd probably perform used oil analysis (UOA) to get an idea how long it could really go.

Though perhaps others would post their UOA results first.

Depends on the bike, I guess. But if you're wanting the major service to turn out to be valves, that seems unlikely given that they've also specifically quoted a valve inspection interval. The only real unknown here is what's recommended at the "major service."
 
Honda is known for the first year or two to have lower maintenance intervals, they did that with the Nc700x... The nc750x doubled the valve interval, same exact top end.

So we can hope that they are just being conservative.

I still do not get why this type of bike has a tiny 2 gallon gas tank. All the styling folks spend so much time getting the bike to look the way they want it to look and in the real world riders find a 70-80 mile range is useless and a PITA to deal with.
So then they get a aftermarket tank and all the design time goes out the window. Why not put a usable sized tank on the darned thing to begin with? It is a dual sort bike that now must practically stay within sight of a gas station. When is the last time you saw a dual sport bike being used as one with a stock gas tank still in place? I don't get it.
I am not impressed by that price either. Folks will line up a year or two from now to buy a used one that won't hurt the wallet so much, but who is going to buy a new one except the folks with too much money to burn. There will always be a "elite " brand that can command a high price, sometimes it is warranted and sometimes it is to fit the cache of that bike. Some times Hondas are superior to the elite bikes, but if their goal is to sell in volume to a mass market, (Honda's traditional place in the market) pricing it so high kinda shoots themselves in the foot.. unless your rich. I am not...regrettably!

On a thumper dirt bike, not a major service for any brand I know of. I know its been published as such, but still holding out hope that Honda either changes the specifications and or its just wrong. I agree, both specs dont help the Honda in the niche of the marketplace this should be positioned.

The oil I am simply not worried about. I am sure with the right oil there is no reason it couldnt go 1500 between changes, maybe more regardless of what Honda recommends.

The valves are another story. Even with a detuned motor, if they are using the same materials and design as both as the R and RX, it might need it. Perhaps for cost measures or performance reasons, they didnt spec a head and its valves different from the competition models. Or maybe they did and like the NC they are being overly conservative on the intervals, only to be increased down the road. I am really interested in learning more about this.

For a lot of folks that ride their dual sport bikes offroad, the small tank is preferred. Those folks than lean toward single track. The only time I put on a big tank is when I absolutely need it and comes off when I dont. Different for an adventure bike, which this bike isnt trying to be out of the box. Just my opinion/experience. Others obviously will vary. :thumbup

Sorry Honda, I am gonna get a few more years out of my DR.

It has a 2 gal. tank so later they can come out with an adventure / rally edition with a larger tank and a higher price.
 
Y'all, remember this is a street legal Enduro ish bike, not really a dual sport. Go figure.

What a moron! Bike looks great though. Premium fuel only? Bit of a drawback but not enough to stop me from getting one.
 
That was rough... Poor guy. Sounds like he go too used to his recluse clutch and his left hand rear brake lever and forgot how to ride a motorcycle without them.
