how can i register a cr500 in california?

good point... i dont own anything in texas im just from there, been here for 5 years to become a resident here.

ah, well then you're out of luck. You need to have a place of residence in the registering state. Not just be from there.

i do have resident there but i dont own. still out of luck?:wtf

Oh, I see. You just need a mailing address basically. Doesn't matter if you rent or own. Maybe even if it's your folks' house.

Btw... my DL expired 2 years ago there. I just renewed my DL here.

Shouldn't matter, but I can only speak from my experience with WA. I know nothing about the TX laws.

My entire family has their vehicles registered in WA and live here in CA (because registering in WA costs $50 vs $300 per vehicle). None of us have ever had an issue with tickets or threats etc. How can a cop pull someone from out of state and write them a ticket on a hunch they really live here? Unless the cop is a neighbor, or is already following you around, they would have no reason to suspect you. As for whether TX will allow the bike to be registered, I have no idea. I would assume they wouldn't care though. But who knows...

Here's the problem with him registering it in Texas , the state has a yearly vehicle inspection program , motorcycles are exempt from the smog test , which is only in force in the counties in and around the Houston area , the Dallas -FortWorth metroplex , El Paso and Austin ( Travis county). He won't be able to get around this because the DPS certified inspection stations have to ( obviously) have physical access to the bike for inspection , can't get it registered without the sticker and they want it in place on the vehicle ( ask me how I know that one).

And cops will hassle you for an out of state plate , you may not have been hassled but I was after running a North Carolina plate for eight months or so after moving back to Calif.

It *does* seem to be a little easier up here in the north state , there's a lot of folks who live here that have vehicles registered across the line in Oregon , also Washington and Idaho. But the caveat is that it could be a big hassle if you run into an LEO who wishes to make an issue of it.

And I know a guy in Houston that went through a whole slew of crap with his RG500 and DPS , almost got it impounded once on a weekender out in the Hill Country , but then again that was a Travis County sheriff that had a hardon for bikes in general.

I guess it would be worth a try but I really don't see a way around the vehicle inspection factor as far as registering it in Texas.

And for the same or not much more money the OP could just by an already plated XR650 or 600 or a Duke/Duje II or DRZ-SM that was legal in the first place.......no premix hassles that way either , with a CR you're going to have to carry that bottle of 2stroke oil everywhere.

Pass on it , it's not an SM , that's not a 17 on the front. And for the same money you could buy any number of D/P bikes , or you could just save your money and buy a DRZ400SM used or a used Duke , or a DR650 or XL650.

Your call though , it's your money.

I have a DR350S that I turned into a street-tard. I got a set of 17" wheels and tires and rip up Mount Tam on it. It's a blast to ride. :thumbup

yea you are right... plus this guy is blowing up my phone like crazy for me to come buy. Must have some hiddin issues:wtf I cant wait to get a duel sport/sm it would be a nice change from a streetbike.. plus those random offroad roads i see look very tempting:laughing

wow thats nice.... is it for sale?:drool:drool:drool

No, I just finished turning it into a DR350SM. I've had it since 1994 and decided it was easier to slip a pair of supermoto wheels and tires past my wife than a new SM bike. :laughing
I call it a poor man's street-tard, but with a decent rider it can hold it's own against more modern bikes. Picture below was taken at Infineon Raceway's Supermoto kart track. :thumbup

haha nice i cant wait to pick one up... onyly $1000 more to save and i can pick up a decent one. so far i got 2k

whatever happens... report back and let us know how it went. A plated CR500SM makes me a warm and fuzzy inside.

Makes my nuts and back hurt from all of the future highsides...

How much longer did it take for the SXV behind you to pass you on the inside? :D :twofinger

If it had a CA plate, then yes, but with a TX plate, they would have no reason to pull you over. They are well aware that the rest of the country has little issue registering OHV motos.
Hmmm then in states like Ohio you can Reg your ATV how would locals' take to that?:|

I wouldn't count on it, it's still a loud 2-stroke that looks like it has no business on the road. An out of state plate might even be more reason to get pulled over.

I stayed in front of him for quite awhile. Just because he had a fast bike doesn't mean he knew how to ride it like one. Notice how he is going wide? :teeth :twofinger
