How do you connect a laptop and home pc to modem thingy?

Trace the cable from the wall (the stiff round one you use for TV cable watching). It goes to a box. From that box (the modem), there will be a thinner flexible cable with a plug that looks like a wide phone jack. Does that cable go to another box, or your PC?

Why buy a router when AT&T provides you with one? I'm not signed up w/ AT&T, but to my understanding, they provide a wireless router w/ your modem. Try calling AT&T and see if you have the right equipment, and if you do, ask them to help troubleshoot it for you.

Just called them and they said I can connect up to 3 pc's to the box I have so all I need to do is buy a cable and plug it in :thumbup

*edit:

well I'll be, looks like my modem is wireless too so if the laptop has that wireless shit I can go that route right?

Ask them if the modem you have comes with a wireless router. You have a laptop, there's no reason you should have to hook up with a cable, kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

If they didn't set you up with a wireless router, ask them to change out your equipment so you do. I'm not sure if there's an additional cost to have a wireless router, you might want to ask them before hand.

why do you want to be physically tethered to a modem with your laptop?

Yeap, unless your laptop is from 1995 or some shit, it should have a wireless card already installed. Just log into your router and configure your wireless settings. Make sure to secure it so your neighbors don't leech off of your connection.

I'm surprised AT&T didn't set all this up for you when they came out to install your equipment.

This type of thing is exactly how record companies end up suing the pants off of little old ladies for downloading tons of pop music; unsecured wireless networks.

Do yourself a favor and get someone knowledgeable to look at how you have things set up before you find yourself on the wrong end of a million dollar RIAA lawsuit.

There's a bunch of numbers on the bottom of the modem that says to use for a wireless system, etc.

if your wireless connection is not secured peeps can park in front of your house and go nutso downloading pr0n, music, torrents, etc...

What he's saying is because you were unaware that you (possibly) have an unsecured wireless network, anyone near your house can gain access to your internet and use it to download all sorts of shit on the internet. Could be music, could be Al Qaeda terrorist plots, could be child pornography, who knows?! Secure your network! :teeth

Look at the sticker on the bottom of the ATT Gateway like Mr Sister/Wife said.

It should have the SSID of the wireless network (2WIRE285 or some such nonsense).

When you get your laptop, search for that SSID. Connect to it. On the sticker, it will also have a number that is the security code for the wireless network. Type that in. Get on the internet. Fap.

Umm, that AT&T thingy came with a manual didn't it? Have you tried looking at it? :teeth

If not, look on the box, find the model number, and google it. And post it up here while you're at it.

:laughing @ scare-mongering because you were wrong.

You're good Ant, just ask AT&T about securing your wireless network, they should walk you through that too, pretty easy stuff. If you see it or wonder: make sure you go with WPA2 - AES security, don't bother with TKIP at all.

If they gave me a manual I have no idea where it is. This is the modem btw.
