How do you remove the upper triple clamp?

ususally you'll put the bike up on a set of stands and then remove the brake calipers and the wheel. measure the distance the fork leg sticks up through the upper clamp. then just loosen the pinch bolts on both clamps, on the side you want to change the clip on, and slide the fork tube down several inches. replace clip-on. reverse process for reinstallation.

or you can leave the front end intact (other than the brake lines if needed) and drop both sides. I did this in a parking lot using nothing but a couple pieces of 2x4s and hand tools on my EX250 once...

Yes, drop the forks, no on removing the clamp, major PITA

Dont you need one of those pit bull stands that can support the front end? I only have a handy stand that supports it by the bottom of the forks.

You need headstock stand to remove the upper triple as well. You take that off without supporting the front you will have an interesting time getting it back on as 400 pounds of bike slams the triple tree stem into the front of the headstock.

dude i work at a motorcycle shop...and i put the freakin bike on the kickstand took the bolt off the upper triple and replaced a clipon and triple back on...these people are makin it complicated...i did have Snap-on Tools tho

el skippy,

Can i do it this(the post above) way, just to get the clipon and triple back on? I'll probably give you a call in the next couple weeks anyway, cuz i'll probably fuk my brakes up when i know i need my new fork valves

yes. however you might have a few problems. the forks sorta' flex when the upper clamp is removed, the bikes on the kickstand so its being pushed to the right. when you try to put the clamp back on you'll have to use a little force, maybe a mallet, you might mess up the threads on the stem and the clamp might not be @ the same height on both sides. i don't recommend this, but sure you can remove it without the stands.

i ended up trying to remove the triple clamp, but i could'nt figure it out, so i just stuck the handle bar in the hole, and hit it with a sledgehammer. with out much force, it went in pretty easily

I've done it this way too with no problems, but I also have Snap-on tools.
