How does buyback work with a totaled motorcycle?

No, just to make sure that your name is removed from any liability with respect to back registration, (if he doesn't register it you are still responsible and DMV has become ruthless)
Unless you can show DMV that the bike was scrapped, (usually you cut the neck off with the stamped vin and turn that in) you are responsible for registration fees.

Yeah I have the release of liability and I'm mailing that tomorrow.

I will file it online, didn't know you could. Also it's not really a "buddy" it was basically a friend who works with this guy a lot who I guess deals with salvaged bikes all the time. So doubt I'll be able to go to the DMV with him. Hopefully everything works out. To be honest I'm kinda nervous about the situation as I have never dealt with a salvage before let a lone the sale.

Also are you saying do both online and mail in?

Also thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

online and mail it in, KEEP RECORDS!!!!

Thanks for the help once again. This is why BARF is great :) . Did the online one and now sending in the mail one today.

Make a copy, keep the original. Send it certified mail.

Keep a copy of the printout from the online one too.

That should insulate you sufficiently from any grief. Keep the paperwork in a safe place.

My nightmare experience in buying back my '92 CBR occurred at Brake Lamp Inspection three years ago.

The bike had a pre-existing chip in the headlamp assembly. Brake Lamp inspector would not pass the bike - a requirement for getting salvage title.

I had no idea at the time that a 2nd generation CBR Hurricane headlamp assembly was as rare as a Jackalope.

The bike STILL has not passed salvage title. I refuse to pay $400 for a NOS OEM headlamp.

I should just street fighter the thing.

Couldn't you just find another light inspector? Mine were all signed off at my local Kawasaki dealership, they do them for free as a favor to the riding community. Nice guys :)

There are only two guys in town who do them, both must have been hit by Dept. of Consumer Affairs or something :dunno
