How legit is Foster City?

How anyone manages to find their way through Foster City is beyond me. It's the only place in the Peninsula I can actually get lost in.

My wife is from San Mateo and my MIL lives near 101/92. Personally I'd avoid anything near 101 and get something close to 280. Much easier commute into the city, and much nicer.

So landlord sold the house and I am being kicked out. Worst possible timing since rent prices are at an all-time outrageous high.

That said, wife likes Foster City because of the canals and relative proximity to SF.

Rent prices there seem somewhat reasonable... relatively.

Anyone have any knowledge or experience with Foster City? How is it to live there? How's the weather?

I think Foster City is nice.

My only complaint is that there are a lot of cops there with itchy ticket books.

I like water sports..

It was pleasantly bland. There's nothing wrong with it-it's just nice enough to stay while you're looking for somewhere better. Very dog friendly.

Compared to where you live, you'll hate it.

Alright, so we looked at the place in Foster City and it is super nice. Signed the lease today.

It's like a mini villa on an island. The backyard ends at the lagoon, and there is a private boat dock. The bedroom overlooks the water. Really cool! Now I just need a sailboat.

The roads are super confusing as they are all curved, so you really don't know which direction you're going in, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I've never lived in an American suburb. Right now we are way out in the boonies close to Alice's with no neighbors in sight and love it. The issue is that Woodside/Portola Valley has become out of our price range at this point so we are looking at lower cost alternatives within a reasonable distance from Palo Alto.

One day my wife and I are going to get kicked out of our Portola Valley cottage and life is probably going to suck. We have been essentially neighbor-free for a few years now and it's awesome. You have my sympathy.

Yeah I will miss being neighbor-free for sure, but our neighborhood has become prohibitively expensive to rent in, so I'm out for now. :thumbdown

Nice! Baller. I can't imagine this not being expensive compared to inland in Portola Valley (not sure which woods it is in)

I lived there a few years in the early '70s. (4-5th grade) in those big square complexes on the corner of FC Blvd. and E. Hillsdale Blvd. There was only the gas station across the street and a huge dirt field where we flew control line airplanes, shot off Estes rockets and rode go carts on gas we simply drained from the hoses at that gas station (FREE!). We used to skip school, "borrow" a Hobie Cat or Sailfish and sail around then return it later. We would unhook docks and push them around the lagoons like we were TS & Huck Finn (not sure which one I qualified as).
We removed the plates form the center walkways on the peaks of the bridges and would drop through them into the water. Want to go fishing? No problem. Walked into Thrifty and shoplifted everything we needed, including snacks. Picked plums off trees in apt. complexes and ate them 'til we were sick. Taught myself to swim in the apt. pools. Had lemon aide and pudding stands. Hung door hangers for local politicians/elections for probably $1 a day. Sold greeting cards door to door.
Got up early in the morning and bought a hot loaf of sourdough and a gallon of milk and walked out to the end of the fishing pier and caught leopard sharks and bat rays.
Left on my Schwinn Pea Picker at dawn and didn't come back until dusk. Rode every inch of FC.

Ahhh, the freedom of having detached, alcoholic parents.

Lots of excellent memories there. Moved back to Ohio in '74 and was called a liar and delusional fantasizer until I stopped telling kids about my "adventures."

Went back and checked it out a few years ago and it pretty much looks the same albeit more built up.

Keep the McDonald's and the shopping mall with the target as the center point and once you've figured out how to get there you'll figure out the streets around there. Lot of people are drawn to the bridge and get lost from there

PV and Woodside are super expensive now. FC is indeed cheaper.

It's becoming fashionable to live there and grow companies where you live, like at the new Startup Castle in Woodside. Small crews are renting out houses where they live and work full time. The demand is much higher now than it was a few years ago when I was renting this place.

I grew up in FC. I used to tell people I grew up in San Mateo. Haha. FC has changed big time. I remember riding my bike to the doughnut shop and playing Donkey Kong on the arcade game there. Loooong time ago.

The rental market in PV is almost non-existent. There are a few cottages attached to larger properties that are rented out (that's what I'm in) and then there are mansions that rent for a lot. Most of those are temporary deals where the owner is gone for a year, etc. There is very little in between those two extremes.

We have a local email list and every couple of weeks there is a sob story of someone who is desperate to find a place in PV, or someone who is losing their rental and wants to find a place to stay in.
