I underwent my first surgery the other day. I had my appendix removed.
According to Kaiser, I was "lucky" for several reasons.
My appendix didn't burst.
I required the less severe of the two standard appendectomy procedures.
I was released about 24 hours after surgery, the minimum amount of time required for observation.

My question is,
Has anyone here had an appendectomy, then returned to riding?

My surgeon said after 2 weeks, I can start to return to "normal" activities.

How long do you all recommend waiting before I ride again?

My bikes riding position has me leaning on the gas tank, right where my incisions are so... you see why I'm asking.

i'm not a doc. but i did stay at a Holiday Inn. I'd say follow your doc's. advice. Coming from a 5+ month stint of not riding myself, i'd say 3 weeks should be bearable.

good luck and heal up.

God damn karbon what happened to you?

Oh nothing medical or serious. My old bike was 20 years old, and i was a 1 year old mechanic :laughing. Thing just gave up its ghost and wouldn't start one day. Finally called it quits on the bike, and putted around on one of my buddy's bike.

Is it just sitting? I could try to help you get it running, I've currently got lots of free time from being unemployed :cool

depends on location on the body of the surgery...

I had a few surgeries last 2 years and I was back riding as soon as the stitches were healed or at least not going to cause any to pop open...:dunno

the incision below my chest was the most painful when riding and laughing...

I had major hernia surgery 2 times and the first time was less invasive than the second time. The first time I waited a month after surgery to ride and the second time I waited just three weeks. When I asked the doc about riding again he was vague and told me two week to a month should be ok. Take your time when you first get back on the bike, feel it out and if you start getting sore stop riding and try again later.

I've found doctors to be extremely conservative in their estimates. They gave me 3 months in a back brace for a multiple-fractured spine. A month and a half later I was almost 100%.

What I would do (and I am not a Dr) is try to ride after the stitches are removed/healed, bit by bit, and see how it feels. Doctors can tell you general guidelines, but each person heals at their own pace.

Try riding in a couple days and see if it hurts. If it does, stop riding for a couple more days. It almost sounds like the doctor ordered bedrest, is that the case?

I have had my appendix removed, and had a portion of my colon removed. I was not confortable with the harsh ride of the motorcycle until after 6 weeks. It will be uncomfortable if you ride before then. The bike tends to transfer the bumps to your body more than a car. Just my experience.

Yes I've been ordered on 2 weeks bed rest. Starting last Tuesday.

After my speenectomy in late July I was back on the track in October.

I had complications, but the rule of thumb shoud be dont ride until your are healed not only well enough to ride without pain and causing more damage, but you cant WRECK withought doing the same.

Heal up and be safe.

Thank you. That's sound advise, and experienced too. Good look...

My wife just had an appendectomy.

My advise, listen to your DR. An infection now, will still screw you more then you will ever wish to know.

yep, you are lucky. i had my appendix bust. i became septic, got ecoli and some other shit...7 days before i finally went to the doctor. i was out and not back to normal for about 5 months after a week stay in the hospital.

for the first year that area itched and almost like that "ghost pains" as if it was happening again. best advise is if it hurts, dont do it like they said.
