How long until ammo prices begin to affect gun sales?

Go back to sleep Brett. Guess you weren't awake when the government started buying up .223, .40, 9mm and other select ammos "for training" by the millions. There's nothing chicken little about that.
Haven't heard of that. Nor is it mentioned in any of the articles that I read about the shortage.

Here is what I'm finding:
Gun dealers report shortages of ammunition
But retailers say much of the demand is from gun owners who are stockpiling in case certain weapons are banned, who believe that economic chaos may be coming, or who are driven by rumors of inevitable background checks or rising taxes on ammunition. Gun sellers and owners say a run on ammunition began shortly after President Obama was re-elected, and has intensified in the gun-violence debate since the December mass killing of 20 children and six adults at a school in Newtown, Conn.

"We absolutely are in uncharted territory," said Larry Hyatt, of the family-owned Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, N.C.. "Our store is 53 years old, and we have never seen anything like this. We have had some spot shortages and busy gun times in the past. This is a level (of demand) never before seen."

He adds: "The political turmoil is intensifying it. People feel like this administration is very anti-gun, and they are going for the legal gun owner." Among the rumors he hears, he says, are that taxes on ammunition are going up and that background checks for ammunition purchases are coming.
I don't see any mention of what you're saying... though I'm probably not as connected-in as you may be to the shooting community. Though that could make you more susceptible to rumors as well as concrete info.

Oh no! Two whole weeks! How ever will you manage to survive??? :cry

I already have a large back-order placed from my normal supplier that should arrive in a couple weeks.

If this store says they have it in stock, why the fuck should it (key word-estimate)take two weeks for me to get it? At $5 a round with shipping, you would think it would be their priority to ship out quickly, if they really had some in stock. They just don't want to lose the sale, so they lie and say they have it in stock on the website. Fuck them, they won't get my business.

I went to buy some 22 ammunition yesterday and could not find any, and I could not find .223 for less than a buck a round anywhere, and .45 had doubled in price from last year; which is fucking ridiculous. Somebody in the ammo industry is making a killing off the hysteria. So when I thought about buying a handgun in a caliber I do not own I looked into availability and price of ammo first and it was so hart to find and expensive I decided not to purchase the weapon. I went through the same thing with a rifle I thought of buying used.

Which leads to my question: am I the only one or do you think that people are having second thoughts about buying a weapon because of the ammo shortage/gouging that seems to be rampant? I mean shit man, I don't even go shooting anymore because I don't want to drop $100 on a half hour that used to cost me $30.

I'd post this on the C__guns forum but honestly I fuckin hate most of those guys, so there you have it.

I hate that place too. I could go on and on....but I won't. If you don't mind paying .50c/rd, you can buy some higher end .22 ammo here. I'm happy I bought 4200rds of the cheap stuff back when I did.

It's funny, but searching this brought up a whole bunch of websites that I know you won't look at...so will just have to do with this one... :laughing (imagine that, the liberal media downplays it and the conservative ones up play it)

Pravda

another one earlier about the forrest service purchases
US Forest Service has an immediate need for ammunition

more:
Government buys 750 rounds of .40 cal

USDA Orders 326,000 Rounds of Ammunition

(and I'm not THAT connected to the shooting community :))

> Go to Natchezdotcom
> click on rimfire (cool, 5 or 6 pages of ammo. Hmmm)
> click on view in stock only
> one item: 22 lr shotshells. FFFfffuuuuuu...

le sigh

I have been wondering the exact same thing. I have just got into guns within the past 3 months and I have to say this is prob the worst time to get into it. I bought a mossberg 3 months ago and shotgun ammo has been around for a very good price. 2 months ago i bought my sig. just a few days ago i bought a glock 23. I almost really regret buying the glock due to the fact that I can not find 40 ammo anywhere. I just found a guy today who was selling 40 ammo for $25.00/box 50 ... ended up buying 2k rounds. I spent so much fucking money on this hobby and now im regreting it because I feel like its just a waste. Its nice to know i have ammo now and that i got it for a fairly good deal (seen 40 ammo going as much as 1.85 a round.) Idk i hope everything dies down soon and goes back to normal so i can get some cheapish ammo and not pay 50 fucking dollars for a magazine.

Holy crap, I went on there looking for .22, and not only were there few choices, a 525 box from Remington is going for $250?!?! I thought that used to go for about $50! :wow

These prices are outrageous! Think it'll ever go back to the way it was, once this run and shortage is over? Or is this the new normal, like the way gas has never really gone back down?

Brett- just before all the "mass shootings" of recent months. The federal government bought enough .223/9mm/40SW and some .357 Sig (for training purposes) that equals 100 rounds to each US civilian, IIRC.

But those hollowtips are just all for training. No worries. It's all good. :flag

I just picked up a few boxes of .40 from cheaper than dirt for the same price I paid in 2011. Maybe not the best price around but no inflation that I can see.

They already have.

Once people saw how much Bulgarian surplus 7.62x54R was coming in here, all the dusty Mosins started flying off shelves.

I've also seen people buy rifles in .243, .270 and .30-06 because ammo is still available.

I suspect what you're going to say is serious shooters just stockpile a lot more ammo than they used to after this.

Oh, the ammo companies and their minions have really found their golden goose and are going to milk it for as long as Obama is in office and they can keep their 'the sky is falling!' strategy going.

You have no fucking idea what you are talking about.

I went to Cabalas near Reno, which is a sporting goods store on steroids. The gun section is 1/3 of the 125,000 square-foot store.

The ammo selves were mostly bare except for the highest priced or odd sizes. Mags- gone.

Here is one of the displays:

Same price but for Federal. They were out of stock for a couple weeks when there was a rush on ammo but when they came back in stock the price was the same.

I certainly hope so, but I don't think it will come down near where it was before. Some places are selling .223 at over $2/round! :shocker
