They sometimes duct tape carpet scraps to their boots for indoor events. Carpet slides well on smooth concrete.

Pretty far for you to go but Sand Hill in Brentwood has Friday night flat track and oval tt on dirt every week from 5-10.
It's best not to start on a 750cc 2 stroke fire breathing monster that scared "King" Kenny Roberts (who was at the races on Fri.).
They are running the Stockton Mile on September 13 this year for the first time in 31 years. The first time a mile track has been run in Cali in 6 yrs. This is going to be a must see race.
The kart/supermoto track is on the upper left to give you a size reference.
