Santa Barbara police officers held a DUI checkpoint on Saturday night.

The Santa Barbara Police Department says 744 cars passed through the checkpoint, and 492 were screened.

Four drivers were evaluated for driving under the influence of alcohol. One was evaluated for driving under the influence of drugs.

No one was arrested for DUI.

Police also cited two drivers for driving without a license and one person for driving with a suspended license.

Eight people received citations for other traffic violations.
Does this happen very often?

Sometimes, but you have to remember, we advertise where and when the checkpoint will be held. Only the truly drunk will pull in OR the drunk who thinks they can slip one by us.

Why is it that you announce DUI checkpoints? I always felt like it defeated the purpose?

Honestly, Im not sure. I think that its part of the requirements for having a DUI checkpoint. Might be part of case law, or the grant or previous case rulings. :dunno

No matter what, never answer any questions. :twofinger

It does make for a shorter report. For example: the guy I arrested last night for DUI. .15 at the time of the crash, on..... wait for it..... Listerine. He chose not to answer any questions, and then chose not to take any FST..... his prize? Handcuffs and a trip to jail.

In summary: Halitosis won't get you arrested. In fact it may get you on your way quicker! :laughing

I don't get it.

Did he say he was using listerine or could you smell it? Was he drinking listerine? Does he get a blood test at the station later?

Sounds crazy, but interesting at least!

Yeah Rel, how did you know he was on Listerine if he wouldn't answer any questions? Did you see empties littering the interior of his car and smell his minty fresh breath? :teeth

I could smell the alcohol, and he admitted to drinking the listernine because it was cheaper then hard booze.

He admitted to "two swigs of Listerine." When I found the 2 liters of Listerine in the truck, he stopped answering questions.

That's a thing? I never heard of anyone getting hammered on vanilla extract. Wouldn't have thought it was possible.
