How much does a salvage title hurt a bikes value?

Where the hell were you, Mountain View?

What are you talking about? If you read carefully, you would see that the bike was already a salvage title. More so, I've had several salvage title bikes and have always carried (almost excessive) full coverage.

all i'm saying is, when i called progressive, statefarm, geico and asked them if they would cover comprehensive and collision on a salvage branded title, they said no.

of course, if i didn't tell them it was branded, of course they would allow me to pay for the coverage. but it would be a waste of money should something happen.

since you were injured you should claim your dr. visits and any medication or treatment you need as well. you might feel ok now, but in a day or two who knows.

also, it's how much you insured the bike for. State farm will tell you what the ceiling is on the value of your 1198, salvaged or not.

Of you can find some way to demonstrate the immaculate condition of the bike before the incident, you could make a case. But yeah. Talk to Storey.

Keep in mind, insurance companies will total a bike for almost anything more serious than a parking lot tip-over, so a salvage title really doesn't mean much these days.

You won't be able to have collision or comprehensive insurance if the title is branded "salvage".

yea this is complete nonsense. I HAVE HAD comp and collision on salvaged bikes with exactly zero problem. you might want to find another insurance company.

also, you CAN get a salvaged title changed to restored if you follow the correct procedures. usually its not worth the time with a bike.

You can collect on salvage bike.

Go to a Doctor NOW and ask for FULL Exam. Don't expect your body to magically fix everything. If you don't you throw away ANY claim you might have on permanent injury. Insurance will pay for it and you are a fool if you don't.

you guys are right, my body feels pretty sore today. It wasn't as bad yesterday after the
accident but today I can barely walk =( I'll take your advice and go see a dr right now...

and thanks y'all for your help, really appreciate it. I'll check with Scotty if things go south and will keep you posted on a progress. Ride safely! =)

I've never heard of anyone EVER doing that. I've always understood a salvage title to be a permanent thing that can't be converted back to clean no matter what you do. Do you have more details on what the "correct procedures" are?
________________

For the original poster: I've owned two salvage title Ducatis and I always figured that they were worth 80% of the exact same bike in the exact same condition with a clean title. You couldn't tell by looking at either of my bikes that anything had ever been wrong with them, other than a slightly different from stock paint job on the ST2.

If I were in your position, and the insurance estimate comes in lower than you like, I would be asking for what it would take to replace the bike with an equivalent one. Start studying KBB, NADA, and any listings of similar bikes for sale to gather evidence for what it should be worth.

I am sure it can be found on DMV in specifics, but its really just a CHP inspection for repair of the damages and certifing the car/bike is no longer salvaged. it will NOT get a "clear" title however. It will only get a "revived" title.

its really focused on cars more than motorcycles though. like I said, i'm not sure its wroth the time. Our bike we had totaled out, we bought back, made a few repairs and filed for a new salvaged title and there was no inspection or anything.

You must be doing well if you can stand on your pegs like you're doing in your avatar. :laughing

Nah I was sitting, I think I might be able to run a short distance at this point before the pain kicks in

Dunno where insurance puts it. But it's all across the map when selling. I've seen salvage bikes/cars at barely a discount from clean ones. Others at almost half price. Depends on desirability, rarity, and vintage, I suppose.

You'd like to think that. But that's not always the case.

I'm pretty sure that what this refers to is getting a vehicle back on the road with a title that says "Salvage" on it. I don't believe there is such a thing as a "Revived" title. I think it's describing the process of converting from one that is not allowed on the road because it was totaled to one that is allowed on the road as a salvage title vehicle.

The two Ducatis that I have owned had already gone through this process and now had a "salvage" title, but were otherwise okay to be back on the road. I passed on purchasing a Monster that still had to go through that process, because there was too much wrong with it.

My experience with state farm with a salvaged title Monster went like this.
Do you have photos of it before the accident? Yes!
Seems to be in good condition prior to the incident.
It was.
Alright first offer 70% of market value because we didn't have any others for sale in our system.
Nope, here were 15 links that meet your requirements.
Oh okay, here is average market value of those links (and 1500 more than I originally paid for it.)
Sweet.. done!

Mind you this was in a not at fault single vehicle collision. I went down in gravel trap with mud under it and took a bunch of photos. Steering stop bent and warped the steering head which made repairing the bike untenable.

who's your insurance company? I'll call them right now and tell them that i would like full coverage on a salvage branded title. if i'm wrong, then i'll eat my own head.

Typically you can find an Insured Value buried in your policy, or ask your agent. They'll probably figure value based upon the initial insured value and your history of usage. (Initial purchase price, # years owned, #miles/year, etc.)

Did you have an agreed upon value with your Insurance company? Not every company does it, but it's a great way to make sure your Insurance company assigns a value to a "special case" bike, and doesn't just slot it under the vanilla "Ducati" category.

well you can save your appetite. I just called my insurance agent and asked. they said "no"

problem is they ARE insuring one right now. seems they may not have realized its salvaged yet. I didn't mention though.... mustve forgotten... :shhh
