How to dispose of old coolant?

Most parts houses will take fluids.

One thing I can tell you though, PLEASE don't mix it in with used oil for oil pickup. That contaminates the oil and it can't be used for recycling. Usually it isn't caught until it makes it to the tanker truck and delivered to the refinery they might have to throw out the whole tank instead of recycling it. They can get some of it out but sometimes it completely ruins the load.

Really? Damn, I didn't know that. Good post, Oz. You just changed at least one person's habits.

well i'd put it out for recycle. its very toxic to animals and since it has a sweet taste they cant pass it up according to the vet it shuts down their kidneys. my dog got a little when i was changing it he stuck his head in the drain pan when i wasnt looking and drank some so it was off to the vet and $300 later he had his stomach pumped and was ok.

NO SHIT? I have had all sorts of stuff in my eye's (contact and brake cleaner) and I can see fine... I need to be more careful glad your ok...

I ended up with a cataract in the eye that got a big shot of brake cleaner, and needed an operation.

Brake fluid *damn near unpallatable

That's because you need to filter it through bread.

Take it to Kragens, etc. Even if they charge you a couple of bucks it's better than dumping down the drain.
Of you can send all your chemical waste to Wall Street so all the brokers will have easy access to it rather than jumping off buildings. Less messy, too.

I just put mine in a milk carton that has a screw top (key is it has to have a screw top, they wont take a pop off top). Leave it out on top of the recycle bin in front of the house on trash/recycle day. When the recycle people come, they take it for free and leave me a clean screw top jug for next time. I do that for my used motor oil as well, and no, I don't mix the fluids. Also they leave me a bag for the used oil filter as well. Same thing. I leave the used (oil soaked) filter in a sealed bag and they take it and leave me a new bag for next time.

well this post is a couple years old, but here's a list of shops in the bay area that take antifreeze:

Great link for San Mateo County above.

In Santa Clara County, you can make an appointment and drop off all your hazardous Waste that you can't/shouldn't throw away. All you auto fluids, paints, pesticide, liquid cleaners, ...

brain damage

Because it freakin smells, and tastes great! Had a water pump on an old Ford pickup drain out the weep hole in the bottom, as I was laying under the truck. Caught a shot of warm antifreeze in my face, and I remember thinking "damn, this stuff's not half bad...."

I heard if ingested and doesn't kill you it does cause brain damage...J/K, sorry couldn't resist an opportunity.:ride Yes, I am a :nerd

damn

You forgot brake cleaner :|

I caught a spray of that in my eye once, and spent the night in the hospital as they rinsed it out with saline for five goddamn hours. That shit cratered my cornea, my vision was fuzzy for a month, and they said if I hadn't had a running hose in my hand when it happened, which went instantly to my eyes, I might have been blinded on that side. :thumbdown

Didn't know brake fluid is so corrosive. Thanks for sharing the info though.

It also applies to coolant.

I heard the french get jail time for putting it there wine, oh if they get cought

It is toxic but its legality varies.. As of 1996 it was being sold as "Glycosweet" to the wine and beverage industry :thumbdown I have personally seen a client of ours add it to Alcopos and low grade Sherry that :mad :thumbdown They were not a client for long :thumbdown

Vintners in France and Germany got busted under trade discriptions and Appelation Controlle violations.
