I haven't seem this posted yet, but waving is OPTIONAL. Don't feel like you need to do it. Ride your bike.

left hand out for a sec is just fine.

patting the helmet means cops in the area

low wave with the left hand

This.

Sometimes it's barely taking your hand off the grip. And whatever you do, don't stick you arm straight up in the air and wave enthusiastically.

First of all: ride your motorcycle and keep control. Do not feel obligated to wave or even look at other riders if you are occupied with your machine.

If you feel it is safe this is the customary greeting:

If the other rider is tapping the top of his head then he's telling you there are cops ahead.

Here is a post I made in another forum about communicating via hand gestures.
When passing a motorcycle going the opposite direction: Rolling the left hand outward, palm up OR removing the left hand from the bar and dropping it to your side between 45 and 30 degrees, palm extended in a low "wave"
* Hey/Hello/Acknowedging another rider.

When making eye contact with another rider: A single, fast but short upward chin thrust.
* Hey/Hello/Acknowedging another rider when your left hand is busy working the clutch.

Patting the top of the helmet with an open hand
* Police ahead, slow down

When next to a rider in a group: Pointing with index finger to fuel tank.
* I need fuel, exit at next possible fuel stop.

Remove left hand from handle bar, hold palm parallel to the ground and act like you are pressing down on something.
* Reduce speed/slow down (typically signals gravel, sand, dead squids* or other slippery stuff on the road)

With index finger point to or tap repeatedly the side of your helmet
* Are you mental/nutters/crazy!?

Remove left hand from bars, with elbow straight and palm facing back repeat a sweeping motion back along the direction of travel OR flash brake light
* Please back off my tail. I see you and I will move over to let you pass as soon as I can.
* If in a group: Open up the column/don't crowd

Rider 1 makes eye contact with Rider 2; Rider 1 points to Rider 2 then to the back of Rider 1's motorcycle.
* Follow me

Rider makes eye contact, holds index and middle finger to his eyes (palm in)
* Pay attention

Rider makes eye contact, holds index and middle finger to his eyes (palm in) then points
* Look in that direction/look at that

Rider makes eye contact, holds index and middle finger to his eyes (palm in) then to self.
* Watch me

Can also be followed with the "Follow Me" to mean "Watch me and do what I do"
Left hand held down, palm back at a 30-45 degree angle
* Stop
* Stopping or slowing down (when brake light is out or to give advanced notice prior to applying brakes)

Left hand held in the air, index finger extended - twirl in a circle
* If stopped with a group: Start your engines
* Alternate: Police/Emergency vehicles ahead (simulating the old fasioned "gumball machine" dome lights)

Starting low at the side with left hand, palm forward, sweep up and forward in an arc
* Go around/pass me

Extend leg out either side of the bike
* Debris/hazard in that direction
* Damn, my legs are stiff, I wish I had highway pegs and a better seat (only if you are behind me)
* If on a track: I am slowing to exit the track in left/right direction

With arm straight, point at ground/object (clutch hand)
* Look out, hazard in the road.

With left arm extended parallel to the ground, chop the hand (palm down) towards your neck and draw it across your throat
* Turn off your engines

With left hand, press the pads of your thumb and index finger together (like you are holding a tiny, delicate teacup) Hold this up and flick up and down like you are playing with a light switch
* You left your signal on/check your signal lights

Holding index and middle finger above your head, palm forwared
* Adopt staggered riding formation

Holding index finger above the head:
* Adopt single file formation

With index finger of left hand, point repeatedly at your kidney.
* Time for a pit stop.

* Squid (n) - A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities. Derived from 'squirly kid'
