I went out to San Jose today to see my dad for his birthday and to pick up a bike (okay, more like vice versa :teeth) and I had to ride over 17 in the rain in both ways. I was the ONLY motorcycle I saw at all and it was completely insane. On the way to SJ from Santa Cruz I saw no less than THREE roll-over accidents. Cars laying off the roadway on their roofs surrounded by cops and paramedics. Yet, despite the exorbitant number of looky-loos and rubberneckers, I still was being passed by people going 75+ in the pouring rain. Keep in mind this was rain and fog so thick I ended up turning on my hazard lights.

On the way back, I actually witnessed an accident where a car going noticeably above the speed limit hydroplaned and got T-boned. The car that slid out got punched right in the driver's side door. It was shunted off the road and started bellowing smoke. Everyone slowed down, passed in an orderly fashion, then proceeded to jump back to a speed far beyond what would be safe for the conditions. At times fog made seeing beyond 50 feet impossible, yet people still felt it was safe to drive far above the speed limit. Cops were too busy dealing with the litany of drivers who had exited the roadway in a spectacular fashion to issue any tickets. Since it's California, almost all if not all of these cars are running summer tires, probably low on air and just waiting to start hydroplaning.

There were many pile-ups and rollovers, most of which I am certain involved multiple injuries, and yet people just kept driving their appliance of a car like it wasn't even raining. What the hell is wrong with people?

The roads were pretty hazardous today, had a few sketchy moments just driving around on the freeway. Couldn't imagine what it would have been like on a bike. Glad you made it safe and sound. :thumbup

I forgot they have the huge reflective white arrows right in the middle of some of the turns. I was running probably 30 PSI on the rear on my F3 and I did hydroplane. Kept it upright and didn't highside. Rest of the ride was uneventful. Gesticulated to drivers passing me to slow the hell down.

uh..not wanting to sound preachy..gesticulating to drivers doesn't usually produce positive effects. They
see you as a colorful nuisance. deal with it.
I got a good CHP gesticulating story..
what bike did you finally hook up yer dad with?

Haven't gotten him a bike yet, gave him a huge number of leads. He's leaning towards a BARFer's Seca 600.

As for gesticulating, a couple of times I just made the "slow down" motion. Some of them were going so fast (80+) I felt like giving them the finger. :laughing

Yeah-they're just going to swerve at you.

The 17, early in the rainy season on the weekend seems like a recipe for dumbfuckery to me. I wouldn't ride it.

I had special circumstances (and I completely suck at planning sometimes). I witnessed a level of stupid I dare not encounter again. Do not recommend.

Reminds me of a story of when I was much younger and drove like an inconsiderate asshole. I was on the way home from work speeding as usual when I noticed someone ahead of me with his arm out the window motioning for me to slow down. I was annoyed by it, so I flipped him off as I drove by. Turns out, he was warning me about a CHP officer on the right lane that was about to exit (the patrol car was blocked from my field of vision). LEO ended up pulling me over and gave me a performance award. Good times... :laughing

Not sure why your gesturing for cars to slow down? Sounds pretty lame.

Maybe because I saw 3 cars turned upside down and people act like they're way too pro for it to happen to them? Maybe cos I actually witnessed a crash caused by traveling too fast for conditions? Maybe because 75+ in 30 feet of visibility is fucking stupid?

motorcycles have hazard lamps??

New gixxer does :party Fog was so thick I was afraid of getting rear-ended.

That, stock damper and the power maps came in handy during the ride back.

I want to know about the Holy Swear Words. Never know when you might have to defend yourself from a fundie.

that sounds scary as fuck :loco

I rode full time for a couple years, back in college. plenty of heavy rain freeway runs to work and/or school - glad those days are over!

glad u make it home OK :thumbup

Congrats on the new bike! And glad you made it home... I used to drive 17 a LOT, and it's amazing some of the asshattery I saw... don't imagine that's changed one bit... :|

Riding full time can be a challenge sometimes, but I like it. Thanks :thumbup

Oh it's changed... now you can see people TEXTING! :loco

And in terms of the bike, let's see if this one clears DMV registration :p

Lol... let me rephrase that... I don't imagine that's changed for the better! :laughing

So what year Gixxer, displacement, and obligatory "pics or it didn't happen"!

My days of driving on 17 used to involve sitting in traffic for hours due to some asshat going off road. And squids thinking they were G-Force.
