i bought extended warranty on new washer/dryer purchase

Depends on what the product is. I definitely buy an extended warranty on fridges. I’ve used it several times.

I took a slightly different approach and bought a Speed Queen recently. They are commercial grade, designed to last 20 years (most come OOB with a 5 year warranty.)

I think Samsung/LG are junk, but so are many of the other older brands these days. I guess extended warranty is one option, but TBH I don't even want to think about my washers/dryers or deal with the hassle of getting them repaired. They should just work for forever.

am triggered by this. bought a samsung set recently. washer works great, but dryer takes all fucking day for a single load. am about ready to push that POS off the cliff out back.

Have you checked that the exhaust vent is unobstructed?

Just needs an aftermarket exhaust.

Leave it to some bikers to think exhaust mods and more noise is always the answer. :faepalm

The only new appliance I will buy now is a refrigerator. The dishwashers today are so "water saving" that they take an hour to not clean the dishes, the washing machines ditto, and gas dryers actually work.

I bought new when I bought my house 34 years ago, and got maybe ten years out of them. Then I bought used. I'm on my third set of used washer and dryer, and they are still going strong. I think they were built twenty years ago. My refrigerator is 6 years old and working well, ditto the gas stove.

yup - first thing checked wrt troubleshooting. exhaust is stock, but adequate. am thinking it's more along the lines of the intake manifold. or maybe the thing needs a turbo charger.

I Shud have bought me another used set, the ones we get for rentals are a few hundred bucks.

Now thinking this splurge on a new w/d is bad idea, maybe I shud just fix my dryer lol

I consulted an appliance business years ago. Extended warranties are money makers for a business. I don't remember the exact number, but something like 75% of extended warranties are unused, basically free money for the business. That percentage covered not just appliances, but the extended warranty business in general.

I try to buy appliances at Costco. You get the manufacturer's warranty plus the additional conceierge warranty, I think 2 additional years. Plus they haul away and install, even up stairs.

That's what I was saying. The warranty industry/warranty products don't exist to lose money for those who sell them. While it's possible that an individual might come out ahead with purchased extended warranty coverage, odds are you're better off without it.

I have in more recent history become infatuated with the Best Buy Open Box store for TV's, appliances, etc.

It is the first time I have made a habit of buying an extended warranty. So far it works well. I get essentially a brand new piece of equipment with a 5 year fuck all replacement warranty for usually a little less than market list price out the door, including the warranty.

Buying the extended warranty is how you ensure the unit has no issues until the extended warranty runs out. "Boy, I'm sure glad I bought that extended warranty!", said no one, ever.

Not me I buy them as they have almost always come in handy. Got a dual fuel range from Costco that the knob broke on and it was some stupid plastic part that I had no idea why they put there. They could not get a replacement part so they paid me out the cost of the stove. Room AC bought at Sams club it went south got it replaced for $40 cost of the warranty. TVs wound up using those a bunch also but I am a business member at Sams so I get an extra year on the warranty for free so I psych out the warranty gods and they fail before my extra year is up.

what's your experience with the contractors/vendors that Costco gets for install and haul away? We've bought appliances from home depot and lowe's and it's a gamble on quality imo. Will look into Costco next time :thumbup
We usually get the extended warranty for appliances, not the dishwasher though since it's less than $1k. We used the Lowe's warranty for our stackable washer dryer (GE) a few years ago. The washer drum was squeaking during the wash cycle, like LOUD. GE techs came by, diagnosed the problem and came back a few days later to replace the entire drum assembly.

We never had a problem with Costco's delivery service. Delivery, haul away, and installation is included in their price. They will also deliver up flights of stairs without additional cost. They set a delivery date at the time of purchase. You then get a phone call a day or two prior to the delivery and then get a call about 20 minutes before delivery to let you know they are on their way. Never had any issues with damaging appliances or walls. They inspected appliances thoroughly before installing them in their final spot and completely tested the appliance after installation. Just make sure you ask for all the manuals and accessories, as sometimes they forget, but that's not just Costco. On a side note, whenever you get a washer delivered, make sure you ask for the shipping bolts. The bolts lock down the drum just in case you need to move the washer later. Costco will also provide you will all new hoses included with the cost of the machine.

My only complaint was our last washer purchase. We got a GE front-load, washer. There was no option to purcase a pedestal for the washer. When I contacted Costco online, they got me in touch with GE parts and had a pedestal delivered to my home. But when the washer delivery came, they wouldn't install the pedestal on my machine. I had them bring the washer upstairs and lay it on its back and I installed the pedestal myself. Not a big deal, but they should have been clearer about that.

R&R in like 15mins, installers made fun of my old units

new units got wifi and can talk to google/alexa, can custom program wash/dryer cycles

FML i just want a normal and delicate cycle, and hot and normal dryer settings, nothing crazy, the washer prespins - determines the load then applies water, crazy shit, guess we paying for a load cell on these things meow

i am trying to figure out if it can make google automatically broadcast when the wash/dry cycles are done and it plays some 8bit tune when its done as well haha
