I solved my own STUPID Mystery. Somehow, water was getting into the dirt below the waterfall. That was why the pond was filled with dirt. My Wife and I worked well past 8:00p., my bedtime!!! Then I had to make her dinner!!!! Aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh!!! I'm tired and I need a shower.
Ohh Man! I was hoping to fricassee some coons, or neighbors!

Since your wife implicated your neighbor; Next time seeing him, tell him have a nice day!

F$%K that guy. He has changed. He knowingly lets his dog shit on my lawn, and pretends he doesn't see it. I did have a nice conversation with his Wife and asked her if she has had any little kids visiting. She said "No" .I have had issues with their relatives throwing paper/wrappers over my fence when they have had parties.

I have heard from other neighbors that his behavior has changed. He's nearly gotten into fights with two neighbors (in the past year), that I am aware of. I'm still very nice to he and his family.

I'm the type of neighbor who offers my neighbor(s) a beer, whenever I see him/them working in their yard. He never says anything, if I am outside working.

I tell my neighbors it’s OK if the dog wants to play on the grass /it’s OK if they rooted it if. I see a poop on the grass I just hose it in, It’s good for the grass.

I'm glad you figured it out. I had a backyard koi pond for 20+ years... I really miss it.

I put in a pond years ago and had koi that got to a pretty decent size. Then the raccoons found it and proceeded to eat them over a few nights. Sadly I live in the country and nature's going to win! I wish I'd dug it deeper, but there was a concern that children could get in trouble. Now I'm dealing with a leak due to a nearby tree and the yearly clean out is a pain. But it still looks nice and a pleasant relaxation spot.

Glad ya figured it out lefty.

Bob... that is sweet.

Glad you figured out the issue OP.

Bob... I second budman that is a sweet koi pond.

Wife loves our pond but damn its a pain to keep up especially with the ducks but she finds the aerator noise soothing so I try to keep it up and damn the consequences. I find that a 22lr persuades the racoons to look somewhere else like heaven for their koi just saying also just read an article on racoons and some kind of brain parasite that can cross over to people which was mildly horrifying. I have spent a few late nights keeping stuff away from my ducks and chickens let me just say life in the boondocks can be crazy.

Lefty, for the dog a paintball gun works wonders on keeping them out of the yard. My neighbor has a bunch of dogs and they are the bane of my existence. They come in my yard at night and poop and they will also knock over my garbage cans. I have gotten a couple with my paintball gun and then they stop coming over but then that dog leaves he gets new ones and they have to learn the lesson all over again. I am not sure if this is true data but the other night I put the cans down by the street for pickup and his dogs were in the street barking away at me. so when I got back to the house I got my break barrel air rifle and pumped it up without a pellet and shot in the air as it makes a huge noise. I did this twice the dogs stopped barking and the next day my garbage cans were not knocked over. So I did it again this week and again cans were upright in the morning. This may be my new Monday evening ritual, drop cans at the street and then fire two air slugs in the air. not sure if it scared the dogs or if the neighbor was like this dude is crazy I need to lock up my dogs but whichever it was it was nice to get up and get ready for work and not have to go pick up my trash at the street.

The only thing you can legally shoot an animal in your yard with is a brussel sprout... DAMHIK

BMWBob-

That is a very beautiful pond. I awoke to 5 dead fish this AM. The water change was too much of a shock. There should be about 8 remaining, but they were not visible at 4:00AM. My Wife is upset.

Regarding my neighbors dog- I LOVE dogs WAAAAY more than people. What pisses me off is that this guy is BEYOND Anal about his yard/house. If I were to ever let my dogs crap on his, w/o picking it up- he would lose his shit. He mows his lawn 3 X's per week.

I will be buying more fish next week, once the water settles.

What's your plant situation like? Do you salt your pond? Quarantine tank? Where do you get your fish?

Or just be free and if they live they live?

Biggest fish I've seen have been carnival/fair fish that were released into ponds.

Well out here in the sticks brussel sprouts are illegal so I give them a lead pill instead.

Sorry to hear your fish didn't like the clean water. It can be hard and they are sensitive.

I love dogs also and it pisses me off that I have to shoot the dogs with paintballs as its not their fault that their owner is a dumbass that does not either kennel them or do an underground fence to keep them in his yard. I have tired everything but technically we are part of our nearest city but that is for zip code only as no city services extend to our neck of the woods. I have tried police jury which is like ordinance enforcement and it doesn't rise to the level of criminality but I have talked to the Sheriff and and going to try again and see if I can get him fined for littering if I can get trail cam pics of his dogs knocking over my cans.

Yes, 50% water change is typically the limit and is stressful, unless you have reserve that has gassed off, and usually maintenance cleanings are 20%. Also, are you aware of the Nitrogen cycle?

Lefty, since you've done two water exchanges nearly back to back I'd recommend getting a water test kit to check pH, nitrite, hardness, chlorine, etc.
Think about getting a 20+ gallon tub to put you fish in when doing next water exchange and a little aquarium air pump, tubing and a air bubbler stone
or strip to put in the tub. Fill with pond water and put in someplace out of direct sunlight. Fish will be fine for a couple 2-3 days in their short term tiny home.

Almost all municipal water has either chlorine or chloramine in it and unfortunately it's hard on fish. If you have a waterfall and /or fountain keep it running
to aerate the water to eliminate the chlorine. Also, check water temp in pond and holding tank/tub and slowly acclimate the tub water to that of the pond before
before adding fish back in. Can also use tub to acclimate new fish to pond water versus just tossing them in.

Bob... sweet looking pond!

We have some very nice water lilies that were overgrown, but my Wife trimmed them back by 75% a few months ago. No, I do not salt my pond. I do not use a quarentine tank, because I have only emptied the pond 2x in 4 years.
