I'm excited to go rock climbing today. It's my first time. We're meeting up with some friends over in Berkeley. The place is called Iron Works. I've never rock climbed before, except for the miniature boulder at Great America, but that was 10 + years ago.

Have you guys ever tried rock climbing?

i tried, (mission cliffs) it gets bloody hard, I just remember my forearms going numb.

pretty fun, ide pick it up if i didnt have way too much hobbies already.

Yes indeed!

Have fun; it's a great sport.

This was taken in late September, 2001, at 12,000' on the north arete of Matterhorn Peak in the eastern Sierra.

haha i tried it at the ucsb indoor wall.....shamed my self
awful form and technique, kept trying to do pull ups for some reason.
little butch girls were smoking me and put me in my place.....seems like alot of fun once you get into it though.

Its fun but a bulging disc in my neck makes it tough. I used to do it a lot. I have a harness and shoes.

The best advice for anyone new to climbing is use your legs. Push with your legs and use your arms for stability. If you are finding that you are doing pull ups the entire way up you are doing it wrong.

Touchstone, the entity that owns Berkeley Ironworks just opened a new climbing facility in downtown Oakland, I think around 20th and San Pablo. My company has a corporate membership at Club One, and they are offering to let us switch to the climbing gym, so a bunch of us are considering doing that. I'm already a Touchstone member so it is pretty painless for me to do the switch.

Anyway, yes climbing is a lot of fun. I enjoy outdoors much more than indoor climbing. But then you are talking serious money for gear.

I've been a member at that gym since they opened and was a member at CityRock and Class five before that.

One of the great things about that gym is that it isn't only a climbing gym, it has a full compliment of weights and cardio machines. It also has plenty of classes like Yoga, Spin Cycle, Boxing, kick boxing, etc.

Plus plenty of good climbing walls for both up routes and bouldering.

A great way of staying in shape and it prepares you for climbing outside which is even better!

Been at IW almost 5 years myself. They just added Crossfit classes.

Love that place!

Speaking of Matterhorn Peak....that's where my photo was taken at. :)

Very cool!

I miss the crags, haven't been out since before my son was born though I did get to the top of the mountains at Gaspe Peninsula October a year ago for a week with my father which involved 100# pack up 3600 feet on steep terrain. Good stuff. :)

I used to lead climb. Thanks to the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport for starting it all.

Rappelling for me was the fun part.

Nowadays, I just watch it on tv.

:laughing:laughing:laughing

Sorry, no skirts in the snow. That's a bit toooooo drafty. :wow :)

Damn, knew I would tangle with you one day. :laughing

Skirts do not work indoors either......it's a harness issue. :shame ;)

There is a frenchman at the gym I could introduce you to. He has a vast collection of vintage 80's lycra he likes to sport.....my fav are the white/grey python print tights. :thumbup

I was wondering a few days ago, as the background does look like a portion of Sawtooth Ridge. What route did you do?

We came from Twin Lakes up the Horse Creek drainage. No climbing gear, just wanted to use the crampons and play in some snow. My pack ended up around 60# due to some group dynamic issues. Still the hardest work I've ever done. Looking forward to going again this summer. :teeth Climbing will depend on who ends up going along. How would you rate the routes up there?

I take the kids to Pipeworks on Sundays. Indoor climbing gym, I belay while they climb on. My daughter is getting pretty good. She likes "bouldering" without the harness. I doubt we will get outdoors though...
