Infusing Vodka

we need to chat about "purification" i'm going to be getting a "water purifier" soon.

And don't be shy, call it like it is - I too prefer to distill my tap water before I consume it. That way I can ensure all the impurities the city water supply has in it are gone before I consume :laughing ;)

Rob, I try to learn something new every month - and I try to get hands on with that knowledge within a year of learning it to help it stick.

I have specific reasons for my quest of knowledge, if others were in the same boat they would likely do the same

Hello my fellow Barfer's. If you don't have drinking problem, you will after trying these recipes. I first infused some vodka around Christmas time. I bought some fresh pineapple from Trader Joes and combined it with Kirkland Vodka. I put in a jar with an o - ring sealedtop . I put it in a cool, dark place for 3 weeks. OMG!!!!! This stuff is like crack!!!

I will be doing it again with strawberries. The bad part is that I must wait for 3 weeks.

If you have any good ideas or questions, please post them here. If any BARFettes want to try some, just let me know.

Uhh, You do know that you can buy those bottles by the case, right? :)

activated carbon absolutely will not remove methanol from ethanol.

using activated carbon should only be used to polish your spirits. It removes aldehydes, aminos and fusil oils. It should only be used in non flavored spirits otherwise you will remove those nice fine flavors you do want... (grappa's and whiskey's come to mind)

You can choose to put your activated carbon in during your fermentation stage as it will remove the cogeners or if you have a nicer setup you can use a fractioning column (next on my purchase list)

A few barfers have sampled "my" bourbon which I like to make a little on the hot side. Throw a cube in, wait a few seconds and it's the perfect blend of all things good

I have a buddy who is a chef in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Vegas. He makes a lot of the bitters for one of the bars in the hotel as a side hobby. One of the other drink makers came back from a tasting tour of one of the vodka manufacturers, and said that they had every possible combination of flavored vodkas there. My buddy went all 'Challenge Accepted" and made a bottle of 'Vagina-flavored Vodka." He poured it into a bottle, added a tampon inside as a visual, and gave it to his boss.

I begged for days for him to let me taste it. I knew it was gonna taste horrible, but I wanted to come back from Vegas saying that I tasted vagina-flavored vodka. The bottle was locked in his boss' office, so I never got around to tasting it. But, he did give me the recipe. Yeah, it would definitely have tasted horrible.

I've done infusion with:
kona coffee beans (Yum)
lavender (not so yum, but may have let it sit too long)
rock sugar + plums: Ume wine
rock sugar + strawberries and mango (yum)
basically any fruit + rock sugar makes a nice liqueur.

just making sure nobody goes thinking they can turn sterno into stoli..

Yes, but I did not want to buy a whole damned case of jars. Does anyone know where I should go to buy more jars without buying a case?

mason jars correct?

sur la table - typically has some nice reusable ones in stock

just by the case of them, they make great storage cases in general

Ikea also sells glass jars in a bunch of sizes with the rubber seal and the spring clip closure. Decent prices too.

I don't know if I would trust those for boiling water sterilization (which you should do even though you are using alcohol)

their website indicates you can hot water sterilize them, not sure what that means since hot is a very vague term :laughing , but you should pre warm them with warm water prior.

I've detailed my post a little better - honestly, the best place to get distillation information at in the bay area is st. georges spirits in alameda :thumbup and then you get to sample a whole bunch of stuff :laughing

and yes, Grey Goose is 100% marketed mid grade vodka sold at "top" prices - now, if you get in to drinking vodkas, try and pay attention to what it's made out of as different mashes make for different flavors. I had a potato and wild flower vodka the other month that was so sweet to the tongue but had the nice vodka feel - so good

Name good off the shelf stuff? I dunno, stoli seems good to me. But I generally mix, so whatever...

my fav off the shelf vodka?

thats easy - Hangar 1 which was produced in Alameda until @2010. They still follow the same recipe and it's ALL superb stuff - especially their "flavored" vodkas which aren't flavored but actually fermented with the flavorings - so keffir lime vodka is made from keffir limes and contains the oils/essence of you guessed it keffir limes

Luksusowa - really the only 100% non grain vodka for sale (most are grain blended)

Sipsmith - copper pot still vodka, zero filtration

My bar vodka is typically Ketel 1

I have infused mixed berry, peach, and blueberry vodkas. Mixed berry was my favorite.

absolutely 100% not true

shitty vodka taste shitty because the distiller tries to stretch out the heart by adding more head and tail...

.../rant /science

You say all this like Vodka isn't just shitty gasoline. :laughing All I know is, I have had shitty vodka (Smirnoff, Stolichnaya) put through a filter and chilled it seemed to taste as clean as a higher shelf item like Grey Goose. :dunno The process seems to work, but vodka is just a mixer booze. You can only refine something that is supposed to have Zero flavor so much. :dunno If you want flavor you drink whiskey.
