Insurance Effect - 1 speeding ticket?

Hi BARFers -

I can't take traffic school right now. Just got another speeding ticket. I was doing a mellow 77 in a 55. Really didn't feel like I was flying.

Any way, he wrote me for a 65 in a 55.

How badly will this effect my insurance?

Currently, I pay Geico $1,200 a year for these three bikes:

2010 KTM 990adv
2007 KTM 450exc
2007 Ducati s2r 1000

It can't be that bad of an increase.....or is it?

Thank you.

I used to pay 165 a month for 3 vehicles; after my ticket kicked in... I now pay close to 300/month. :barf

fuck that - it happened south of Tahoe. Near Markeleville. Too expensive to do that.

Worst thing about the ticket, the cop told me he wanted to get rid of his CBR and buy either the KTM 990adv or 12gs. He grilled me with questions for at least 10 minutes. How does the computer work? This spot tracker is neat. What's the torque like? Do you ride 2-up at all, because my wife wants to ride with me. Gas mileage......etc....

AND HE STILL GAVE ME A TICKET.

I had a cop who tried to engage me in bike conversation while he wrote out my ticket. Told him to fuck off, give me my ticket so I can be on my way.

My insurance never went up even when I had two speeding tickets in a two year period.

Next time, toss him the keys. :twofinger

I was under the impression that the first ticket would not be recognized by the insurance.. (technically its his 2nd but traffic school made first go away) so this would be his first in a sense.

Have I been fed incorrect information?

No, thats typically how most insurance companies work. Not all of them, but most of them.

Thats why I say the OP contacts his insurance company and inquire.

In my experience, your insurance doesn't go up until you receive two moving violations in a three year period. So you would actually have to get three ticket in a three year period before your insurance would increase. The first ticket isn't reported to your carrier if you take traffic school, but if you get two additional tickets within the same 18 month time frame, they both get reported to your carrier which will probably raise your rates.

If you get the 3rd ticket outside the original 18 month window, only the 2nd ticket gets reported to your carrier because you will be eligible for traffic school for the 3rd ticket.

You really have to be a menace AND get caught to raise your rates.

YMMV.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. It's not the LEOs fault that you were doing 77 in a 55. It's not the LEOs fault that you got caught doing 77 in a 55. It's not the LEOs fault that you can't do traffic school to cover the ticket. I can see how all of the LEO bashing in this thread could make a LEO pissed off and start writing people up for what they were actually doing like 77 in a 55 instead of the 65 in a 55. He did you a favor and you still paint him as in the wrong. Did you expect to get pulled over and just get a warning while going 22 over?

^^^yes I did. Because I feel entitled. I feel like my mere presence on this earth brings so much wonderous joy to the world that speed limits just don't apply to me.

:laughing:thumbup

FWIW, I'm in the same boat as you. Had an out of state speeding ticket and my Progressive rates went up about 50%. I was originally paying $99 every 3 months and it went up to $150 every 3 months after the ticket kicked in. Keep in mind I did INREASE some stuff on my policy coverages after my ticket though, so it may actually only be like a 40% increase :dunno. They drop off after 3 years (at least for insurance) I believe. One more year to go!

How's that working out for you?

I blame Jerry Brown and Joe the plumber..! :twofinger

There are way too many factors to predict how much one speeding ticket will increase your insurance rates, the number of cars, number of drivers , your MVR, the insurance carrier, previous losses, location, traffic school attendance and state law.
On the positive side, most insurance companies do not check your MVR every year (some every 2-3 years) unless there is a change to the policy. If they do not check, then your rates will not change.

Did you try to take traffic school for that ticket?

I took the online traffic school for a ticket I received out of State. I even had a relative who had a license from another State take the Level 2 class in CA, for a speeding ticket in a 3rd State. The certificate was sent to that State to satisfy their requirements.

Well, lets say the universe just bitch slapped that idea into next week!

Oh believe me, I tried my best doing the research.

I qualified for traffic school and did a ton of research. There's a grey area with out of state tickets. I made a thread in the LEO forum, but to summarize:

-Driver's License Compact allows citing state to transfer any traffic violations to the visitor's home state.

-I worked back and forth with the attorney's office in the county I received my ticket (was in Utah). In THEIR jurisdiction, only a UTAH approved traffic school would remove the point from THEIR system; no point in Utah means no point transferred to CA.

-However, only a resident of Utah is allowed to take a Utah approved course. So I was basically screwed.

-In between all of this, I called many different DMV department including the one that handles the recording of such violations and traffic points.

Because of this grey area, I did mange to negotiate with the attorney's office via email. If I took an online traffic school here in CA and mailed them a certification of completion then they would reduce my speed on their records to one where the fine was greatly reduced. That was the best they could do.

You had me at Utah. :p

One thing that I found is that traffic tickets in California are generally handled by the County, and generally one County doesn't know what the other Counties are doing.

Meaning, if you get a traffic ticket in Solano County, Napa County, Stanislaus County and Sacramento County, all in the space of a few days, you can take online traffic school for ALL of them and they will disappear off your record.

(Don't ask me how I know this....)

California/DMV just SLAMMED that door shut.

All traffic school remidiated offenses get reported to DMV. The DMV will kick out anything that does not meet the 18 month time limit.

You might get lucky with counties that don't have thier act together but think the good time are over.

I just did traffic school for a 10 over in Bishop on the 395...

anytimetrafficschool.com

20 bucks use code 3519 for an additional 3 dollar discount.

You could get through this course in 40 minutes flat. Of course I took the whole prescribed 8 hours to finish it :cool
