Is BARF Dying?

I think a RIP tread is a bit premature...

Yes and no.

Some regulars have quit riding entirely or, unfortunately, passed away.

Haven't ridden in 2+ years, but still have my last moto on the tender just in case my mojo for riding (lasted 44 years) returns.

Spend more time in the KS and Political area now, and riding my bicycle or driving my sports car which I've showered $6000 into in the past couple of years, (bought it in 1994).

But.

I remember when this place was hopping. I don’t think any less people are riding, they just aren’t posting up. I blame social media. A lot of good forums died because of fb....

I'm not inclined to blame FB etc... those seem to be mostly look-at-me crap. It's more like actual discussion/interaction with others is losing appeal.

I don't know if it's dying or not but things are definitely slower here now than in the past. Covid has changed much. I will say I've met a lot of people here and have a host of friends from barf.

the combined impacts of facebook (no cost to host a group, vs servers and software to run a forum) and vertical scope (ruining once good forums) have done a lot to cut into the popularity of forums. people backing away from riding, passing on, or moving out of the area have also affected the traffic, i'm sure

that said, i'm glad to see BARF continuing, still believe forums are MUCH superior to FB, especially for technical stuff you want to be findable again, and unless i commit a booboo that gets me shown the door before then, will be here till the lights go out.

Fartbook sucking the life out of everything in it's path

Maybe...

Online forums in general are dying because companies like "VerticalScope" are buying them up. Then they fill them up with ads and shit moderation policies, essentially ruining what built the forum originally.

Specific to motorcycle forums there's also the factor of younger folk not owning vehicles, let alone getting a driver's license.

I think BARF is still pretty vibrant. A couple of weeks ago I asked for advice on how to install foam earplugs and quickly got many responses. Surprisingly the thread lasted several days and garnered dozens of responses before it died out.
The recent RIP thread on Sonny Barger was another one that took off fast and lasted quite a while.

I kinda got out of riding for the past 5 years, just sold one bike and got a new (to me) one and now I'm getting back into it. I enjoy forums over social media places because of how permanent a lot of the content is. On social media, it's hard to find a post from a week ago. On a forum I can find things from a decade ago.

I'll be here for a while still.

It doesn't help either that the sport is general is in a decline.

The market's been mostly flat, and while there's new blood to be sure (someone is buying all those 300s), a lot of it old folks moving up. Selling a few more bikes, more expensive bikes, but not necessarily new riders.

If sites like BARF are dying, according to Revzilla, who was sucked up CycleGear's nose like some cheap cocaine, they seem to have missed the fact that some, like BARF are still alive and kicking.

Maybe the story isn't that "Forums Are Dying" but "Revzilla doesn't have a clue"

I haven't ridden in 10+ years but I met some amazing people through the BARF community. Whatever is left of this forum, hope it stays as long as it can! :ride

Sadly, I believe it is and Rezilla's article sums up the key points.
It's all about smartphones now and BARF's format doesnt work well on them. When I meet and chat to younger riders, many are completely unaware of BARF.

We just need some technological upgrades..
