A good arcticle on how the internet is shortening our attention span. Yes I realize this is not exactly new news but it comes at it in a slightly different way, even talks about how it affects seasoned lit. majors etc. The whole current issue is really good. Just think of all the time someone posts something thats more than a few lines long on barf and then some jackass posts 'tl;dr' (dont be so predictable as to do it now :twofinger )

I don't know about that but the Firefox auto spell check sure has made me lazy as hell.

Bah they made the same complaint about TV and about radio. Same argument different subject. Old luddites thats all they are.

I don't think our attention span is shorter. Its just we dont have to sit through an hour of TV news and commecrials just to get to the damned weather.

I think the 'Net is fundamentally different from broadcast media, and truly is changing the way 'we' think. Whether that's good or bad is an open question. Printed text certainly changed society, maybe the skimming and jumping around that the 'Net offers as a substitute is better, maybe not. I think it's great that people are researching and thinking about the possible outcomes.

Considering how many people fail at using it I will go with the "it is making us stupid" crowd.

But TV has unquestionably made America stupid. I mean, shit, talk about the great pacifier of a nation, it is unbelievable the overwhelming typhoons of apathy and intellectual laziness television has bred in us. That's why I shut mine off so many years ago. Internet media is another story. I think that it is positive because it is a more active medium for gathering information. You have to go get your knowledge, your entertainment. You have to THINK about what you want to know. The colossal leap in the improvement of a society based on that one small difference is phenomenal from what I have seen. Of course as society continues to get more plugged in I'm sure that will change. The same media companies that are taking advantage of mankind's inherent laziness with television will figure out a way to make the internet a simple process of log on to your machine and stare gape mouthed before the great talking heads. I'm hoping the more social aspects of internet communication will help us build a stronger society despite that fact though.

+1 And I love being able to highlight a word or phrase, and have Google look it up for me.

Damn, am I a lazy ass or what? :laughing
