No it's not ok. And if you are clipping mirrors while splitting lanes stop splitting lanes.

I just wheelie over the mirror or mirrors if it looks like it's going to be a little close. However in your case I wouldn't recommend it. :wow

I'll go against the crowd and say that I clip mirrors.

I commute 50 miles a day, most of it is in really bad traffic.

I don't feel that it's acceptable, for sure it's a mistake. But if you commute everyday in tight lanes, tight traffic, it's going to happen. You need to accept it and move on if it does happen.

Certain cars will be the same height as your bike and make it really easy to clip... My VFR likes to hit Jeep Grand Cherokees. It took me about 3 clips to figure that one out.

Sorry, I just can't lie and say that I don't clip mirrors.

Also if lanes are really tight, I'll pick the car I'd rather brush up against. If it's a Ford or a Chevy, I'll pick the Chevy.

:laughing Too true, the Ford might flip over and explode! :laughing

Hmmmm... speaking of 'beseeching'...

You're calling me shallow because I accidentally clipped a car mirror? Well I must say that is not very Christian of you my friend and neighbor. Perhaps you should not be so quick to point out the speck of dirt in your neighbors eye before you notice the log in thine own eye. Or perhaps you should work on turning the other cheek you hypocritical fuck. How little is your faith; I beseech you to remove that Jesus quote from your signature immediately.

YOUR quote looks AWFULLY familiar! I won't sue if you promise to revamp my suspension! :laughing

hhahaha :teeth

i don't like it how some riders split lanes as it is (when i'm in a cage). If someone hit my windows while they were splitting..there is a GOOD chance i'd get out of my car and run after them and bring em down.

If you do hit a mirror, then stop, fess up and give the person your sincere apologies.

I'd get out too, unless it's Dono. Cause kevo*3 = Dono.

Motorcycle mirrors are like cat whiskers - if they start hitting stuff, you're getting into a tight spot and your head might get stuck.

Listen to your mirrors.

HI,
I had a very nice conversation with two chp motorclyce cops at the AMA races about lane splitting, .the following is what they have said,
1. if you are splitting at faster than 10mph than the traffic is moving they can write you up for reckless driving or being unsafe.
2-they said the most common accident in lane splitting is
hitting mirrors or saddle bags hitting the car, even if your wheels are in lane 3 but your bags or mirror hit a car in lane 2 , you are at fault.
3- lane sharing is not a god given right like some people seem to think, that cagers most move over to let them by, if two cagers want to hug the line to block you that is their right, they cant swerve into you, but even if they do the only way you will win is if you have a witnesses to support you, if he says he was changing lane and didnot see you , it will still be your fault. They said of all accidents 95 percent the motorcycle will be sited in the wrong.
The vech in front has 100 percent right to the lane , the full width if you deem to pass its your responsibility to do so safely.

this was the word from chp

Ut ohh, that comment is going to cost someone a mirror. Sometimes I like to buck the system ;)

just think if we all whacked a mirror a day, there would be so many less mirrors in the way.

If you cannot fit, don't split.

:laughing You sound like Johnny Cochrane.

To echo everyone else: no it's not OK to clip any part of any other vehicle. I don't ever have that problem 'cause I don't have any mirrors :laughing :wow That reminds me... I need to get some :(

Bad idea dude !!! Whether it was an accident or not, you shouldnt have been squeezin where you couldnt fit, If a car tried squeezin and clipped you, whether on accident or not, there wouldnt be a discussion here would there ?? Its not cool !!

Sometimes it's not really because you "can't" fit but because it's in reaction to something happening around you. I clipped a minivan mirror once while I was splitting up to a light because some dumb shit next to the van tried to "change lanes" while stopped right as I was going by. Usually in really tight traffic, I'll lean the bike over and counterlean to "miss" hitting mirrors if I can't get by otherwise.

Bad Mojo there.. Remember, "What goes around, comes around.."

If I was caging it and you clipped my mirror, but then pulled over and owned up to it, Id respect ya for it.

You may have gotten away with this.. But that next rider who may encounter that same cager may encounter some form of hostility thus creating a new thread entitled, " Did anyone see that fuckin driver on Fulton Avenue that tried to squeeze me in? "

Catch my drift?:cool

I've clipped a mirror or two, but not because I couldn't "fit"; sometimes, the cars decide to try to creep in on you. It happened right after I went from my EX250 to the F3; I think the mirror height and sticking-outage is very different between the two. Now that I've adjusted, no new clips. Never caused any damage or even folded in any mirrors, though. Light taps. I also noticed that a lot of the "if you clip a mirror you must pay with your head" people live in areas like San Jose, etc.. ya know.. the cities in which the lanes are wide enough to land freaking jumbo jets on? Splitting in the city and Berkeley (hell, most of the east bay) is crazy and the lanes are tight as all hell. On most days when I'm not in a hurry, I don't even try to split. Especially down messed up tight streets like San Pablo..

Is it ok to hit mirrors? of course not! is this a trick question?

Sorry, but if you clipped 2 mirrors while splitting at the same time then you have no business splitting lanes. I've never clipped a mirror or any other part of my bike on any car in my 3 years of riding. If it looks to tight, stop and wait for traffic to start moving again.

I've found that when I do have to stop because I can't get through, a lot of times the drivers will see me and move over a bit so I can get by.

How would you like it if someone cruised by on a bike and hit your car mirror?

Notice your location as she pointed out rightwing... :laughing :twofinger :p She just called all the south bay riders pussies that have it easy. :laughing Considering what the roads and traffic is like in SF, Berkeley and Oakland... I would have to concur and I'm a south bay rider myself... :cry
