Is the Hayabusa still the fastest "production" motorcycle?

That was a nice 12R you had dave! I think I've seen you post a time or to over on bikeland.
Yeah, I sure miss that bike; has to be one of my favorites I've ever owned. I loved the way it made me spontaneously giggle in me helmet; it was so fast I found it hilarious at times. It was one of the 1st around here as I got it in May, 00. I had it for over a decade; but it didn't fit me anymore so I sold it to a bud in TX rather than let it sit in the garage gathering dust.

He's only put 700 miles on it since purchase in 11'; keeping it as a "collectable" so it's still mint w/under 9K miles total. He sent me that pic the other day; says he only rides it to bikenights & bike shows to show it off (he has a dozen bikes.) Has hardly changed it since I had it as it was bling'ed out when I had it. (sigh....)

I sure miss that powerhouse...oh was it fun to ride! :thumbup

Always good to hear from riders that have experiences...to what I giggle/euphoria, about, with My 05 ZX-10R. Ample power is nice, Insane power is a drug :thumbup

Yes to some as opinions vary when it comes to subjective stuff. I think the S1000RR's frontal stink eye looks pretty "vulgar" but some like it just fine.

I dunno, but if I were to judge a bikes personality based on looks I'd say the 'Busa complete with camel speed hump is the one I can most imagine coming home at 2am and waking up the SV and the CBR because we all have to do sake bombs like right now, then takes it's shirt off and starts bench pressing these two ninjettes it just picked up at cycle gear and while technically they're fully faired, they sure are showing a lot of side cylinder, and we're all thinking, 'yeah he's a great guy but I wish he'd stop pulling this every damned Tuesday night', and we just know Mr and Mrs GS next door are going to complain about the noise.

Not to anthropomorphise too much, of course.

Mr and Mrs GS.. the sweet, quiet german couple next door that just love to get dirty!
:rofl

Little known fact:
The correct pronunciation of Hayabusa is "eye-abuser".

I contend that it is one of the top 3 ugliest mass-marketed motorcycles.

I read somewhere that the Dodge Tomahawk was never ridden over 55 mph due to instability issues. they may have been rectified later allowing a top speed run to be performed at alater time. im not a big fan of Dodge but thats basiclly because i own one of thier trucks!

The Wikipedia article says Dodge doesn't recommend riding it. So it's basically another example of form over function.

No, those are limited to 300kph. Fastest production, completely stock motorcycle is the '99(?) Hayabusa, before they limited it as well.

'99 'Busa is still the fastest top speed in Motorcycle Consumer News' archives, (188).

S1000rr is #2 at 186.7.

ZX14 and new 'Busa are #3 tied at 186.

"fastest" is so not carved in stone....Even on drag strips, it varies with the particular drag strip...And...all of these bikes have a cut-off, at the ECU. Reflash that thingy, and presto...More MPH. And who gives a big rat's ass on these numbers anyway, unless you're on one of these drag strips or the salt flats,, and...running un-modified class?

I've read that Sport Rider did a comparison...and awarded the top rating to the ZX-14...over the Busa. But again, Who would know, when it's in a territory, You're not going to touch, on any public road?

What does get touched there, is how the throttle response feels,
and the bike feels/fits, (stability and secure/solid, etc). And how it looks to the owner.

Sure, but I was just curious. I don't intend to buy ANY sports bike anytime soon, it just seemed that technology and weight loss would have crowned a clear new king by now.

King, is vague, when King of what, isn't defined (and fastest, without a where, is vague).

Where I ride, I can hand every Busa I've come up to, their butt...so the ZX-14 and Busa, isn't as fast as an older ZX-10, on Ebbetts pass.

Now when a S1000RR BMW, or 4th Gen ZX-10 makes it on scene...I'm expecting it to kick everyone elses ass.

I know I have to cool it a knotch, on mine, because when the rear tire is unhooking (getting some air), the RPM's are taking the engine up in the power band, quicker than I can maintain a shread of control in. The new bikes, (BMW and Kawasaki) would handle that, enough to stand a fighting chance.

Obviously skill is a factor in real riding. My buddies and I blew past a guy on an R1 on our 800cc GSs because the guy didn't know how to turn. In a straight line or against someone who knew how to ride we'd have been smoked.

I guess the question is silly, but since the Hayabusa is "known" as the fastest "production" motorcycle...

Well, some of us do use the bike for what it's intended for. The majority of my riding anymore is drag racing or land speed race events (there's plenty out there besides the salt flats, ever hear of the Mojave Mile?)... Running low 9s in the quarter mile, and trying to break 200mph in the standing mile is a rush you can't get from anything else.

So when it comes down to who makes the fastest, that is very important. If I want to stay competitive, and also achieve new goals and possibly break new records, the new ZX14R is the bike I need to be riding, period. No other bike comes close.

In 99/00 it was a challenge to see who could build a bike that went 200mph off the showroom floor. Both the Hayabusa and the ZX12R came very close, and depending on what magazine you read would depend on who was closer. I think it was like a 60-40 split though, with a tad more mags saying the hayabusa was faster, but really it could have gone either way. I think the looks/name/and marketing of the hayabusa just caught on more with the general public so that's why you all ways hear people jump to the conclusion that the hayabusa was the fastest. Regardless, neither one did 200mph stock, and the government put a damper on the fun. After that, manufactures decided they didn't need to design the bike around the sole purpose of running 200mph. That's why if you look at the ZX12R, the '01 was a carry over of the '00 but just had a limiter. In '02 they changed the looks of the bikes, redesigning the ram air snorkel to something that looked better vs something that worked better at 190mph. And while a handful of current bikes can run very close to 200mph if de-restricted, none of them were all out designed to do so, unlike the early model hayabusa and ZX12R.

With all that said, I know most of you feel like who cares? You're crazy for going that fast, blah blah blah.... well, ya... it's not a sport for everyone. But drag racing and land speed racing does have a strong following, so things like "who currently makes the fastest bike" is pretty relevant to guys like me.

Did You not see the "unless your on a drag strip or the Salt flats" ? Yes I would of included lake bed (s), but, I thought I'd covered it well enough.

I was just talkin Public road...since nothing else, but public road, had come up, at that point.
:thumbup for what You are doing, and...didn't I say the ZX14 was the current top dog in that fight? :thumbup
