you've raised a good kid I can tell! :thumbup

UCSC alum
biochem and molec bio
1999

met my future wife on campus. got to go for a nature hike between every class. spent zillions of hours at the science library (sci li). hugged many, many of those beautiful trees out there. needless to say, the campus is very near and dear to me.

if you can afford it and are interested in the SCruz area, buy a house for the kid to stay in and rent to him/her and their friends. I had friends whom their parents did that for, and it became their retirement home. rental rates are high especially near campus, so paying for the mortgage is a possibility esp when you get 4 or more (responsible) kids to share it. that's what we'd like to do when our kids are ready...if they so choose to go to such an awesome university that is.

best of luck to you, sir.

how old is the kiddo? I jr. transferred and once I turned 23 I received grants (and loans). If you don't make a lot, perhaps filling out the IGETC now and try your luck is a good idea. doesn't hurt to try for some free money (grants that is).

^^^^^^^ times infinity.

Found access to some help based on a timely exit from employment and a two year, no income, break.

Worked out well. :thumbup

They dont take retirement/401k $$$ into the formula. :party

FAFSA is what you mean i think? definitely comes in handy...better tell your son to get his hands on some before pell grants are cut a few billion like proposed!

Thanks for the kind words, she's 17 going on 37, trouble I'm having with grants and scholarships is that I make to much, Shh don't tell anyone here lol.

Woah, did you have a bio chem class with Mike Dalby? How about eukaryotic with Chuck Wilson. Or Cell bio with Doug Kellog? I was MCD back about then, We may have had a class or two.

IIRC I had three prof's for the biochem series: Noller, Ludwig and one in the middle which I can't remember. could've been Dalbey but I'm not sure. Einersdottir for the lab. This is strange that I can't recall, because I was really in to that series. the science shit finally started to make real applicable sense to me during that time. ah well, I'll ask the weef tonight and see if she can remember.

YES I had EMB with Chuck. his class kicked my ass! had to take it twice. IMO there was just way too much info in there for a one-quarter class. I frequently left his lectures with my head spinning.

BMB diverged from the MCD path at cell bio, so I never took it. or immunology, which is ironic because I've worked at an antibody-based biotech for 9 years now.

Had some friends in MCD though...you ever know Mark Kenney (went by Harvey a lot) or Skip Mack? They graduated in '99 as well.

Congrats man!

My daughter took her PSATs last fall and is now starting to get her College recruitment stuff in the mail. Good thing she is only a sophmore. :teeth

HA! I was able to make it through that class in one try. Chuck is a bad ass though. I worked In his wife Lydia's lab. I was a grunt. His RNA lab was right next door. We (lab members) were actually all pretty close for a while. I even took Chuck surfing at the lane once. He and his family moved east to Boston years ago. He started his own company and is still in industry. One of my close buddies went with him after graduation. Small world.

I don't think know any of your buds. I was to graduate in 01. So they were ahead of me a bit. It wasn't long after Chuck's class that I got really dis-interested in bio. Dunno why. I left the whole gig to cut and melt metal.

Oh you didn't miss much with immuno. I forget the prof but she and the TA were awful. I got zilch out of it.

Santa Cruz is pretty swell. I'm currently posting from the Science & Engineering Library.
It's jam packed with students frantically studying for finals.. and I'm barfing.. :laughing

It's a good feeling to not be worried about finals :angel

Anyhow, campus life is pretty cool in its own right. I sure enjoyed my first year on campus, but having a place of my own has had it's benefits, most notably is that even though rent can be expensive, it's still much more affordable than living on campus.

Parking a car on campus is ridiculously expensive, so I hope she doesn't plan on having a car around too often. Motorcycle parking is much more reasonable (and free if you're willing to take the bus). Does she ride by any chance? :ride
