Ok let’s get into it.
I’ll give Elon his flowers for actually making something to show people and get the carrot dangling out for them to chase again. I’m sure some of the people who got tired of parking their $50k deposit for the Roadster eight years ago and got their money back, went right ahead and reserved this latest version of the car which he says will be in production in 2028. And this time he does mean it. This time. For sure. Yes…for realsies.
Ok, who has heard of a car called the McMurtry Speirling? You can google it if you like, but the broad strokes is that it is a single seat 1000hp electric car that is pretty much shattering all lap records on any track they put it on. For the low low price of a little over a million dollars. It’s so fast because of its physics defying ability to stick to the road (enough so that it can stick to a surface upside down) and maintain obscene amounts of grip. It can do this because it uses a high powered suction fan to dramatically increase downforce on the tires and stick it to the surface. Pretty much exactly the same thing Tesla just showed you last night. Cool. Since this McMurtry company is already proving it works on tracks, that means the tech isn’t just a parlor trick. And since Tesla is a much bigger company which huge factories and all that, surely they can actually bring their sucker tech car to market. Yup, absolutely believe this is a real thing they can do. Problem is the McMurtry is not road legal. Some in part because it’s a track only car with no lights and proper proportions, bumpers, and so on. But also because of that fan! You can not possibly imagine any country’s Department of Transportation or whatever their regulatory situation is will be fine with a rolling vacuum cleaner that’s sucking up every little bit off the road and throwing that debris out of its exhaust fan for everyone else to live in. And if they are? Buy some stock in whoever owns Safelite, because broken windshields are going to be a regular thing for anyone following one of those cars.
Party trick #2, the 0-60 in less than a second with the cold gas thruster launch? When he said years back that they were going to use SpaceX tech and put thrusters on the Roadster to make it super fast, most people thought he was just insane. I was one of those people. Not because it’s not possible. Obviously it is. I thought that because of the same reason you’re not getting a vacuum fan either. In no way shape or form is the DOT going to allow a car to be on public roads that is capable of emitting a supersonic blast of air coming out of it. Let’s just say they sell one of these under the guise of you won’t use the thrust mode unless you’re “off road” at some kind of drag racing event…it’s going to take all of ten minutes before the first asshole who took delivery tries it at the first stop light they find. And whatever poor sucker in a Nissan Altima behind them at the light is going to have the whole front of their vehicle just destroyed. Like a bomb went off in front of the radiator. Also enjoyed hearing the engineer saying the top speed was around 230mph (which is realistic), but then Elon in so many words telling him that he ain’t done yet because they expect the car to go Mach 0.5. Engineer…hope you know how to make road car tires that won’t completely disintegrate immediately at 300+mph, because all those actual tire companies haven’t figured it out yet.
And that leaves us with the real showstopper. The flying. You can only put a deposit down to reserve one by “invitation” only. So unless your name is Peter Thiel or Joe Rogan? You probably ain’t on the list. This will absolutely be a seven figure price tag too. And do I have to say it? Do I? Hell, even Tesla says that version won’t be legal for road use.
