A burglary at a motorcycle dealership in Petaluma led to a police pursuit through Marin and into San Francisco, where the thief or thieves escaped with the stolen cargo.
The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday at K&B Motorsports at 326 Petaluma Blvd. North, where a U-Haul box truck was seen leaving the business with its loading ramp down, said Petaluma police Sgt. Brian Miller.
Police arrived to find the front glass doors smashed at the business. A short time later, an officer saw a similar U-Haul truck in the area and tried to pull it over.
The driver of the U-Haul truck refused to yield and ran through traffic lights before getting on southbound Highway 101. Petaluma police chased the truck into Novato, and the California Highway Patrol took over the chase in the Ignacio area.
The chase continued south with a CHP helicopter following. When the truck reached San Francisco and made several dangerous turns, police called off the chase because of the risk to the public, said CHP Officer Andrew Barclay.
The truck was still missing on Monday, Miller said. Police determined that five motorcycles or motorbikes were stolen from the Petaluma business.
The U-Haul truck hit several vehicles during the chase, but no injuries were reported.
Police did not have a description of the driver or any accomplices.
K&B Motorsports is closed on Monday and the staff could not be reached for an estimated value of the stolen vehicles.
