Kawi code 24 on ZX-4RR, and I'm getting a little paranoid.

So my dumbass dropped the bike for the third time ever since I got it. It was stationary, but pretty hard this time because I was not in a position to catch it like the last 2 where I just forgot to put the kickstand down. I was trying to lift the rear with rear stands. It ever so slightly too wide, but I went with it for some stupid reason. It slipped, fell on the exhaust side, and the rear-stand was caught under.

Lifted the bike back up, did a visual inspection, and I don't see apparent damage so I went on doing chain maintenance. I tried taking it out for a ride around the afternoon, and then I noticed the speedo reads 0mph as I was cruising around ~40mph. Not long after, check engine light is on, blinking warnings on the dash, so I pulled over and got the error code. FWIW I was paying extra attention since the drop, and the bike felt ok to ride at that time.

I immediately went back home, took enough fairings off, but was not confident in taking the fuel tank off alone as it had more than half a tank's worth in it and I did not have anyone to help. Managed to trace back the speed sensor cable to its connector, and it did not feel, or look loose. I did not have a feeler gauge to check if the sensor's distance is in spec, but now I'm getting a little paranoid if there's actual structural damage over a relatively gentle fall. The rear stand did get caught under so it's not exactly a simple fall... but still. Killed my mood this afternoon.

I’m not a mechanic but have broken enough moto toys to have learned the simplest and least catastrophic answer usually seems to be the correct one. I hope that’s the case here.

Online search shows Kawasaki Code 24 relates to the rear wheel speed sensor not reading. Check that the gap isn't too wide. Check that isn't crushed, broken, or missing. Check that there isn't crud built up obscuring the air gap. Check that the wiring is intact and connected.

People have experience similar issues after riding in the rain. Fault code appeared. After things dried up, they ride it a bit and the code cleared after a short time. Some have had luck disconnecting the battery/ECU to reset the fault code. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, since you were fitting a stand on when the bike fell I wouldn’t be surprised if you knocked that sensor. visually check it. It’s possible it’s actually broken. You can totally ride without that, by the way. And you can also buy a new one and replace it. Secondly, do not be so hard on yourself for dropping that Bike. We have all dropped our bikes. We’ve dropped them on the left and picked them up and thrown them down on the right. Just part of the deal 😊

Yeah it’s riding fine but the odometer won’t move because the speedo doesn’t work (the conclusion I arrived to, not sure if it’s actually the cause). So I’m trying to keep the odo in check and not diverge too much.

Alright after spending the afternoon taking my he fairings and the gas tank off to reach the rear wheel sensor, I guess the sensor is cooked.

It appears that when the bike fell, this part right where the rubber bushings on the cable are hooked onto got crushed and I assume crushed the cable with it…

I only noticed because I was trying to take the whole cable out to inspect the sensor. Could’ve noticed that without taking all the fairings and the gas tank 😒

Seems like an easy fix. Could have diagnosed it much sooner but I guess I get to know my bike better because I put the time working on it, which is a good thing.

It doesn’t look that terrible. If you’re capable, you probably could go in and do a little wire repair.

I don’t know why I did not think about that…

I ended up ordering a part anyway, but i’ll splice the old sensor just so I have a backup in case this happens again

Yep, sensor was it. Spare part arrived today. Replaced it real quick and the speedo is now reading speed again. I’m gonna do the code reset cycle tomorrow. So relieved it was such a simple fix lol
I told you so!

Bravo and well done. :)
