Knocking noise when revving with clutch in

So I just got an 03 fz1 with 12k miles.

The test ride went perfect and so did the ride home from san rafael.

Going to work today I noticedd that when I blip the throttle to downshift to second, with the clutch disengaged, there is a slight delay and then metal clunk/knock.

To investigate further i found that this happens in third and first also. Then I tried jsut rolling down a hill at 20-50mph with the clutch still disengaged and just blip the throttle, the same things happens. It seemed louder on the way home then to work.

I havnt looked into it at all yet but Im hoping a sprocket is loose or something thats easy to get to is loose.

It shifts perfectly.

What do you think? maybe the clutch plates are grabbing on something? I'm not too familiar with moto transmissions but I'm hoping I dont have to drop the motor and take the trans apart on my 3 day old bike.|:(

If you put the bike in first then pull the clutch in and push the bike, does the bike roll "freely", aka no clutch drag?
If so, this means that it's not the clutch or transmission, and something's wrong in the engine.

i don't follow. Can you pleae explain what could be wrong with the engine?

Also I forgot to mention that when doing my revving tests while at a complete standstill with the bike in any gear. Everything sounds a feels completely normal.

Im going to start pulling side covers off tomorrow and carefully work my way in. Any aprticualr things I should look for or things to check?

Thanks

Sorry, I read your post incorrectly, I thought you were having engine knocking.
Do this: put the tranny in neutral and rev the engine. If you get the knocking sound, this means you got internal engine issues.
If it does not, you may just have something loose or a bearing worn, or something more simple.

haha thanks dude. Its absolutely not knocking. no internal engine problems.

Its something in the driveline after the combustion part.

I don't know if Im hoping or honestly thinking that its something simple because.

this happenes in the lower gears that have more drag, it doesnt happen in neutral, nad it only happens when the bike is moving...and it shifts fine.

Im thinking its something not inside the cases and is more chain related.

When I start taking things off tomorrow is there anything i should pull or twist to see if it has play/ shouldn't have play?

You may have excess play on the drive sprocket(the one mounted on the transmission).

Some chain ticking noise when the wheel is turning is normal. Maybe lube and recheck the chain slack/tension.

Regular chain maintenance is important. :rolleyes

ok took off the front sprocket cover and all the sprockets are on good n tight and the slack is perfect.

Went to misson motorcycles and one of the mechanics also has an 03 fz1 with 75k miles and it makes the same noise.

Throttle blip/clack. He says its totally normal for the fz1. the guys on fz1oa say its totally normal too, just a yamaha thing....i guess ill worry about it when it stops shifting.
New used bike paranoia still in effect. My HONDA never did this....HONDA HONDA.

Also, My chain and sprockets are gorgeous but I really ant to go -1/+3 maybe even more. do I HAVE to get a new chain? will this one have enough links?

Hey Super Tire Guy. Can you pm me a quote on the cheapest/longest lasting commute tires ($/mile ratio) and mount/balance? The tires on there are 185 but I'm ok with 175 also if you give the nod.

PM sent.

Every bike clunks when you shift it standing still with the clutch pulled in. Unless the shafts are spinning to make dog engagment easier.

yep the bike does clunks when standing still.

But there is also a clunk noise when you blip the throttle with the clutch in while rolling in the first three gears. But you can only hear that clunk, it doesnt make the bike jerk

Let me rephrase what I was trying to say:
When it gets around time to change the oil, the transmission becomes noticeably louder when shifting. It clunks when I put it into gear, clunks into first, into second, etc. It also clunks when downshifting.
So you may just need to change the oil.

So when you first said "Knocking", the first thing that came to mind was engine noise.
Also, I still can't make sense of this sentence:
Going to work today I noticed that when I blip the throttle to downshift to second, with the clutch disengaged, there is a slight delay and then metal clunk/knock.
Are you shifting when it makes the clunk, or do you simply blip the throttle and the sound is made?

simply blip the throttle, and then the sound is made. No shifting involved, just the blip....but only when rolling in gear.

....I know I shouldn't have used the word knocking. I meant clunk/clack.

There are no engine problems.

Well maybe some FZ1 owners can chip in here to say whether on not that is normal.
