lame comparison (Top Gear: Ariel Atom vs 600RR)

Thanks for the update. I LOVE TG and I also realize that everything they do on the show is to be taken with a grain of salt.

Hah, I totally knew before the end that it wasn't James in the Atom. You also need to keep in mind that the track was designed by Lotus so it's all about light, nimble cars with good power/weight ratios. It would put anything like an Atom at a huge advantage over a Bugatti...let alone a bike since they last 2 corners are vicious.

Holy fuck! That thing did a 1:15 on their track?! That's fucking insane! :shocker

Now, here's the thing though... I think they shouldn't have put them head-to-head, at the same time. They should have sent the bike around first, then sent the car. By doing it this way, you have the car doing kind of a block-pass on the second-to-last corner, causing the bike to have to let up so the car doesn't take him out. I'd much rather see them send them 'round one at a time and compare the times.

I'd rather see them send the pro-racer around the track without instructing him to sand bag. Seriously, I see AFM yellow plates leaning further, and using more gas through the corners.

It's not like they're hoodwinking the Brits. They already know all about motorbikes over there.

Just a silly and visually appealing show.

This video got it right in that the braking is where the car has the advantage. You have to stop fast to go fast.

Right, and that's how Lotus designed the track.

The Superbike rider was definitely sandbagging a bit; the lean angles were a bit laughable, and he wasn't even tucking on the fast bits. But really, this is Top Gear. You don't expect that they'd let a motorcycle win, do you?

I wouldn't expect them to let a bike win... With that said, in my recollection, the following have beaten a car...

- A climber
- Skiiers
- Bobsleders
- Bicycle
- Boat
- Bus
- Airplane

So... Yeah. Apparently bikes rank below the rest of those. I seem to recall Clarkson breaking out a chainsaw when a Ducati went on the cool wall.

With that said, both Hammond and James are bikers. So, I think a lot of the anti-bike thing is in good humor.

And I believe the marathon runner beat the car also.

The Atom is viciously fast, I wouldn't doubt it to be faster than a bike at all.

So i caught a episode of the car show TOP GEAR. Normally its a all right show. But tonight i was laughing so hard when they preformed the lamest comparison of a car vrs a streetbike.

The car they used was an American car the Ariel Atom, which i will say is a very fast car.
So right of the bat u could tell they changed the tires to race tires on the car.
So here was the funny part they used a right out of the dealer CBR600RR the guy was a totall squid which mayde it more entertaining.
So long story short this show claimed this street car could beat any streetbike in a race on the track.....God i love TV what bullshit

That episode is very old. But, next time you post these types of threads, link it to the youtube vid:

Also, a big fan of top gear. :thumbup

Awwwww I miss calling them motorbikes. Clarkson; such a merchant banker.

it's easier/safer to push a car to the limit on cold tires than it is on a bike w most likely stock DOT's.

i'm sure tiff (the driver in that segment) was called upon since he did the civic v 600RR test w toseland @ cadwell and has some semblance of driving ability

Tiff's got a pretty good resume as a professional driver, including multiple F3 wins, several appearances in F1, a podium at Le Mans, and coming pretty stinking close to winning the FIA GT1 championship. I'd say that qualifies as some semblance of driving ability. It's like saying Jamie Hacking has some semblance of riding ability.

Do you think it's possible they just don't want to broadcast such aggressive riding? The driving they do is very aggressive, but a lot harder to hurt yourself if you're halfway smart about it than on a bike.

I remember being out at Willow Springs on the big track and they rolled a few of us F1 sidecars out while they were doing a 'parade race' demonstration for the fans in the stands and some of the more interesting/fast bikes at the AHRMA Corsa Motoclassica weekend.

I took it easy the first couple laps since I was out there with motorcycles and I'd never ridden on the track at the same time as bikes, but then I noticed the guys on full-blown racebikes were not holding back at all. So I wicked it up.

It was almost laughable how easy I was able to catch and get around the bikes...

They'd be rolling off the gas sitting up to brake when I'd be grabbing another gear and still accelerating towards my brake marker. The bikes while running a narrow single-track line that making the track wider for them still ran a rail-like I-don't-want-to-deviate-from-this-path line. I had so much traction around the corners and ability to get away with murder that I could run anywhere I wanted to in a corner and still pass with feet to spare.

The bikes could accelerate out of a corner faster, but I could carry a hell of a lot more speed into and around a corner, and I could drop anchor to the tune of over 2G's without locking up my tires at the end of the straights. :teeth

Doesn't surprise me, I'd bet both motorcycle racers AND formula racers (at least, the ones with a bit of humility) would agree that riding a moto at the real, true limit takes a lot more skill and cojones. :)

(In other words, 4-wheels is easier to drive fast, at least up to some large amount of fast)
