Kid starts college in a month, and we are looking for something that will be best for this environment. Can this be done around a $1000.00?

I'm doing masters in computer science right now and my school computer is a sub $400 laptop w/ win7.

I don't see why he'd need a laptop that costs more than a grand when most likely it's going to be used to type up papers and post on facebook. :p

$400 laptop + anti virus software+ ad-ware software+critical Windows updates at ast monthly=?

It takes a while to compile FF. :laughing

The new macbook airs are pretty awesome. They're small, weight nothing, and get great battery life. I bought one for my son and like it way better than my own macbook. My only gripe about it is that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard (most don't, but I've been spoiled by that feature).

Would a netbook suffice? :dunno

I have a netbook which is perfect as a small computer to carry around. No way would I want one for day to day use. Perfect if you're dead broke and that's all you can afford, but if you have the means get at least a 15" notebook for $500-$600.

Starting today, get a free Xbox 360 when you purchase a Windows 7 laptop worth $699 and up. BestBuy has this in this week's sale ad. There maybe other retailers offering this. Deal requires a valid student ID or .edu email address.

Thanks all.

He has one already (laptop) that is stuffed with gaming crap, so I thought one just for school work would be best. I have a Dell netbook that I hide at work to barf (heh heh) which is fine for that ,wasn`t sure if they had enough storage for school work.

netbook screen is awfully small to stare at while watching pr0n typing up papers and doing other various schoolwork.

I've bought three laptops in the last six yrs for the same reasons...any Win7 unit in the 400-700$ range will be more than adequate, and the macbooks are great if you can afford them but prbly overkill....

FWIW I would not buy another Dell laptop, espc for a college kid - none of the three I bought have stood up very well to the physical abuse, and Dell has a pretty poor rating in Consumers Report for Quality/Reliability. The last one had two trips back for warranty repair in the first six months - bad chging circuitry and then the hinge failed....then it was manhandled by my son (jury is still out on whether it was mistreated or not :laughing) that resulted in a broken screen and a $200 repair bill. :thumbdown

I bought a Gtwy i3 widescreen for $470 @ Fry's in Jan that I love so far...and I have had v. good luck with IBM/Lenovo's high quality of mfg.

Apple will be having a back-to-school sale. It'll either be a free iPOD Touch or $200 off an iPad.

should know more during the next WWDC.

Forgot to mention Best Buy does 18 months SAC for everything over $250. Just a thought.
