Stage 3 - 2 January 2005 - GRANADA > RABAT

Before the crossover to Africa, Europe hosted a last Telefonica Dakar 2005 show for the numerous Andalusian fans with a 10km special just outside Granada. After the long 920km liaison, the competitors faced a dirt track in Armilla before heading to Morocco and its capital Rabat, via a boat transfer from Algeciras to Tangiers. In the bike race, Frétigné proved once again he was the king of European specials while McRae used his WRC skills to capture the best time of the car race.

Close to half a million fans gathered in Barcelona yesterday to bid farewell to the Dakar competitors and the crowds in Granada were just as impressive. After a short 6km liaison to make it to the military terrain of Armilla, the bikers and drivers were all unanimous on one issue: the conditions were perfect for a great show with the sun shinning and the fans cheering. And that certainly helped David Frétigné (YAM – n°12) in his quest for a fourth special win on European soil in just two years... and four stages (not counting the Clermont prologue)! In a final time of 7’57”, the Yamaha official rider indeed continued his 100% success run. On a lighter 450cc bike and with all the talent of an enduro World champion that he is, ‘Fretos’ flew to his 5th stage win on the rally. “It’s fantastic but I have to keep cool. It’s always good to feel well and to ride with pleasure. Concerning the special, I really enjoyed myself. It was really beautiful with nice bends but I didn’t expect it to be so slippery». The Frenchman beat a rejuvenated Alfie Cox (KTM - n°3) by a slim 2sec margin. “I’m very happy because my shoulder hurts less and less, claimed the South African. Yesterday, after the very long ride, my shoulder ligaments hurt a lot so I had to take pain-killers, but now, everything is all right. It hurt a little during the special but it’s getting better and better”. Fourth of the last Dakar, Cox indeed suffered a bad fall in the first special of the rally.
Second in Castelldefels, Cyril Despres (KTM - n°2) had to settle with third spot, 3sec adrift. Meanwhile, to the great satisfaction of the crowd, local rider Jordi Duran (KTM – n°16), a newcomer on the rally, captured a very promising 4th place. “It was an enduro type of special. I felt really comfortable. It’s a good result for me but the most important thing is to make it to Dakar and the Lac Rose”.
In the bike overall, Frétigné comforts his lead with a tiny 11sec advantage on Despres. A strategic satisfaction for the Yamaha rider: “To take off in the leading position will give me the possibility to be careful. My secret dream is to be on the podium in Dakar. If I can make it to the top ten positions in every stage, it should be possible for the overall”.

Scott Harden, the "old-timer" within the team KTM Red Bull USA, was satisfied as well. Not only is he going on his second Dakar but he is also team manager for the two youngsters Chris Blais and Kellon Walch.
"It was important to me that my boys would not be within the top today. They like to step on the gas but that wouldn't have been good tactics today.
For the first stage in Africa tomorrow, it is better if Chris and Kellon drive in the tracks of the others. They still have to learn a lot." Kellon, by the way, has his 22nd birthday today. Happy Birthday!

Stage 4 - 3 January 2005 - RABAT > AGADIR

Bike special cancelled

Due to heavy fog, the organisation has decided to cancel the bike special of stage 4 between Rabat and Agadir. The visibility was too bad for the bikers to compete in good security conditions. They, therefore, went to CP1 as a convoy and then used a normal asphalt road to head to Agadir in a liaison.
 
Gordon Reclaims Dakar Lead

American Robby Gordon won his second special stage on the Dakar Rally to reclaim the overall lead on day four as Britain's Colin McRae dropped down the order.

Gordon, who won the opening stage, clocked the fastest time on Monday's 123km special between Rabat and Agadir in Morocco in his VW to lead France's Stephane Peterhansel by one minute in the overall standings.

Gordon's time of one hour 14 minutes and one second was 53 seconds quicker than the Mitsubishi of Peterhansel, with France's Bruno Saby (VW) in third.

Overnight leader Colin McRae slipped to 10th in the overall standings in his Nissan after finishing 11th on the day, almost four minutes behind Gordon.

Monday's motorcycle special stage was cancelled due to fog which meant Frenchman David Fretigne (Yamaha) remained in first place overall.

This is not the first time a motorcycle special stage has been cancelled in Morocco due to fog and the organisers considered it too dangerous for the riders to race in poor visibility.

As a result 216 motorcycles travelled in convoy to the first checkpoint, where the special had been due to start, before making their way to the stage finish in Agadir which involved a further 400km.
 
The rally left Europe and Spain under beautiful sunny conditions, but for the start of the first real African stage, the weather had completely changed with heavy fog on the Rabat area.

Impossible in the early hours of the day for the bikers to take off for a special that would have been dangerous with very poor visibility! The same incident had already happened back in 1994 when the conditions forced the organisers to also cancel a special.

All bikers were therefore asked to head to CP 1 (km 63) nice and easily in a liaison before using a normal asphalt road all the way to the Agadir bivouac. Certainly a big disappointment for overall leader David Frétigné (YAM – n°12) who would have gone through a nice first test against the KTM armada.

Two and a half hours later, the fog had disappeared and the weather was perfect for the cars to take off for their 123km special.

We have had several traumas over the past few days, Pedro started off well and then destroyed the mouse on his rear wheel 25 Kms out of Barcelona – the good news was he picked up his sat phone and 20 mins later he had a new rear wheel and mouse complements of the support Nissan and F350 and off he went.



Lots of KTM bikes in the Rally are destroying batteries and it looks like there is a world shortage of batteries or at least in Africa, Mark Eland is now running on a KTM factory battery thanks to his KTM support package and KTM’s help.



Mick Extance’s Honda is running well and Dennis is painfully attentive to every need of the bike – he also checks on Mike once in a while.



Our resident Aussie, Mark Eland, continues to have a bright and sunny outlook regardless of how late he gets in and what happens to him on the road – a man always with a smile on his face.



Paul and Mark Round missed the boat from Spain by a couple of seconds and had a long wait before getting across, they did get to wave goodbye to Paul Green and Richard as they left on the boat Paul had missed.



Paul Green’s assistance crew appear to be able to operate on no sleep at all !! They arrived at Rabat at 7AM – stopped for coffee and then set off again for the next day – I did catch them having half an hours sleep at Agadir airport but once Paul’s car arrived from that days stage they were up and at it again.



Michael Hughes continues to quietly persist at a steady rate despite a brand new KTM with clutch problems but Sid Milton spent some time tweaking and fiddling in Granada and things got better from then on.



Francisco’s wrist is giving him problems but his Dad’s keeping a careful eye on him and trying to hold him in line.



The Americans Charlie and David – well there Americans and keen as mustard ! along with there support crew Mike and Zoli they definitely operate as a mobile party – we are all trying to train Zoli to understand British.

Stage 5 - 4 January 2005 - AGADIR > SMARA

With 654 km planned for this stage including 381 of special, the competitors face the first long African stage of the race today where endurance and a clear mind will be precious. Before entering in the heart of Southern Morocco, the competitors won’t yet be in sandy landscapes but the most inexperienced will meet tracks known to be extremely rocky and difficult.

The cancellation of the first Moroccan special, that was planned to come as a good preparation is particularly bad news for the newcomers on bikes who will immediately discover the real difficulties of a Dakar.

Andy Caldecott (KTM – 23) clocked the best time of the day's special in a final time of 4h13'13". The Australian wins his first ever Dakar stage in two appearances (he was forced to withdraw after breaking a leg last year). Caldecott beats Marc Coma (KTM – n°6) by only 3" while Cyril Despres (KTM – n°2) is third at 3'30. Marc Coma takes command of the overall lead with a 42" advantage on Caldecott and 2'45". Former overall leader David Frétigné (YAM – n°12) finished the special over 10min adrift and is now at 9'34 from the new overall leader.
