Ive been renewing my license by mail for the past two cycles, but not this time. Its time for a new photo, a vision test, and a thumb print, so i have to go there in person. Will they let me keep my old license for keepsakes after maybe punching a hole in it? I know if you dont know, you will just say to say i lost it, but id rather know the real answer.

There is something about upgrading security on California ID and Drivers licenses. January 2018 is a critical date for compliance for 'Real ID' Driver's license. That date is when domestic flights will require the 'Real ID' license or Pass Port.
CA DMV has an extension until this October to become 'Real ID' compliant. From what it takes to get a Pass Port. Its likely people will be having to provide a Birth Certificate or active pass port. Bet that is why California is dragging it's feet - how un-PC it is to ask for official documentation. A Federal standard that can't be diluted by the State.

Don't know if they take the old drivers license.

I just renewed. They did not take or punch a hole in my expired license. They looked at it and gave it back.

Sidenote, I couldn't take the picture when I originally went in over a year ago because I had smashed my face real good. I didn't go back soon enough and had to retake both car and motorcycle written tests. If I would have gotten my picture sooner I would not have had to retake both exams.

They've been re-using my picture from at least ten years ago when my hair hung to my waist and my goatee was down to my chest. :laughing

One eye is pretty bad but I don't want to have the 'must wear corrective lens' box checked on my license. I used to stand in line and memorize the eye charts before they'd call my number.
Now I get contacts prior to the DMV testing cause my memory went to shit. :laughing

You'll want to stay away from the right side anyway, my bike does a wicked loud kill-switch fireball.

I wear glasses most of the time, I just don't want the man forcing me to.

I'm due and not looking forward to spending the day at dmv.

15 min with an appointment.

I still wonder what the hell is with the last 10? 15? years of people complaining of long wait times all the time.

4 out of 5 cases it's a "go in / go out" situation with me.

This year, one out of the 2 appointments I had to wait for like an hour, that was very strange. I could clearly see the other people/pairs waiting in front of me, all already signed up with an appointment--and getting processed very slowly--so there must have been the one time problem

For license renewal, you must make an appointment anyways. I had to do it a couple years ago and it still took close to an hour once all was said and done. Show up, check in, wait, go to one clerk, do stuff, go wait, get photo taken, then ya go. Ok, maybe 45 minutes, but it definitely wasn't in and out.

They give your license back because they mail you the new one. You don't get it right then and there.

In regards to appointments for other DMV issues, the appointment system doesn't always work out well. Last time I had to go do some ish there, the next available appointment was weeks out. I didn't have time for that shit, so I got to rot in DMV hell.

FWIW There are better DMVs than others. I found one out my way.

Shit! Just made an appt. Soonest I could get, hayward, fremont, oakland and pleasanton was july 20th!

Just finished my DL renewal. 20 minutes with an appointment. I'm officially old now, I had to change my hair color from brown to gray.

yeah. It might depend on the DMV location and on top of all varies with days or 'type of appointment'.

I spoke a little too soon.

I actually went to the DMV recently. There were about 60 people in line outside .. in SF. I passed all of them. (appointment) there were additional 20 *for the appointments* only

My appointment cut my line only. Then I still waited for the staff to process others. It just depends. We're talking I cut all the other 80 people that didn't have an appointment... and I still had just 1 person that took 15 min in front of me--some D.O.B problem

I walked in for a DL renewal at 0950 on a Tues withOUT an appointment and walked out all done at 1010. Santa Teresa DMV. Your experience may vary.
