Luxury Cars in Low Income Areas?

My Crazy Russian coworker lives in Sect. 8 Housing in SF, right across from AT&T park!! He's an ELECTRICIAN who makes damn good $$$. He and his Wife go on vacations that most people only dream of.

As others have said- a lot of people offload those high end cars when they are due for a major service. I hear the timing chain/belt service on those is insane.

Since people are so fixated on "How can THEY afford those cars and I can't", here
s some background and perspective. (speaking from my own perspective)

For many years Blacks could not purchase homes in higher income areas, so they were relegated to living in the 'Black' areas, which were much cheaper. Many of those people had the money to live elsewhere, but were frustrated in their attempts to do so. Therefore these people would show their wealth by driving Cadillac's or some other fancy car. The interior of their homes were often lavish as well.

I grew up in EPA and had several neighbors that were Dr's and others that owned their own companies. I was blown away when I walked into their homes; on the outside they looked like any other home, on the inside- they looked like a home in Atherton. (The polar opposite of what UDRider described)

I had a neighbors who drove a backhoe at the Palo Alto Dump- this man had a 6th grade education, but he owned 12 houses in EPA. I know of others with VERY similar stories.

Sevweral 'old-timers' that I worked (Maintenace Mechanics/Electricians) with grew up in the south. They grew up being treated like trash, so they NEVER ate out in a restaurant . (in my mind) They were scarred by the way they had been treated - so they never went out and did the things that most people spend their $$ on; vacations, restaurants, concerts, etc. They just went to work for 12 hours each day, 7 days per week and bought houses.

Try not to be so myopic- you cannot always judge a book by its cover.

^ My uncle near DC has a garbage man who drives a Rolls Royce on his off duity hrs, same as you describe lefty. He OWNS the garbage bussiness he drives for.

Just offered one potential alternative. Based on some middle class, primary white, anecdotal evidence. Thank you for sharing your experience.

This is less prevalent than you believe it is and, statistically, largest group of offenders Caucasian.

Geez, people, stereotype much?

I didn't really see a specific group called out in Mototireguy's post but maybe I didn't read the fine print in there.

When I used to give the software engineer from work a ride home everyday so we could use the commuter lane he lived in a trailer park off Monterey Highway at Bernal Rd I believe and I would see Rolls, Benz and assorted other high end cars there. I asked him about it one day and he said it was people that were working in the area for the pay but did not want to buy houses and may have been planning on leaving once they made thier money, so they rented in the park. Now this may not explain it in da hood but that is one reason for it.

Yup. The girlfriend's mother lives in Pacifica in a trailer park. She's literally right on the ocean. She has a house here in Nevada for when she retires and a few rental units in Tahoe. She's just there for the money right now.

Not quite DC, Waldorf to be specific. He was an older guy too, 60's. Had been doing the garbage biz all his life. Sounds more gangster than it really is.

There is no garbage company on the planet that is on the up and up. :laughing I know some garbage people, that's all I'm sayin'. :twofinger

Hahahahaaha I used to live by the transfer station in San Martin and all those different blue bins you guys separate your different plastics and crap in all get dumped in the same place and put in one hauler to the main dump. Eco-suckers.........Also, China is no longer accepting the worlds recyclables/garbage so now they are all going to landfills or just sitting somewhere destroying the environment.

Don't believe the recycling hype.......:wow

That would be odd, since here in Contra Costa at least, the company that picks up my blue bins is a totally different company than the one that picks up trash.

Do you get multiple bills for waste collection? Republic Services does everything in Martinez.

Rap and crime pay very well....and specifically in this case pimping....

I see the same thing.

When I was a kid, I delivered papers in this lower middle class neighborhood. I once had to go inside this one ratty house to get my .60 cent subscription money, and this house was like the Taj Mahal on the inside. Blew me away. People spend money on what is important to them. They didn't care about the neighborhood or the condition of the exterior of the home.

I see people in poor neighborhoods who own a car worth $800, but had $3000 Donk wheels on it. I don't know where they got the money for the wheels, but they don't have the means to live in a better place with a higher monthly rent. The car was their status in their 'hood, and makes them feel better about themselves. They aren't going to be happy struggling to live somewhere else. The wheels were a one time expense. Funny thing, in the town where I live, there is a place called Rent N Roll, where you can actually rent the wheels and tires for your car. These are high end wheels where you can rent normal size and 22" and 24" wheels and tires for you Hoopty for 3-24 months. There is no 'hood within 20 miles where I live, so I don't know who their customers are.

I also know people on government assistance who drive upscale cars. Most are older cars that are just kept up really nice. They aren't new vehicles. There are people in the low rent areas who make a living detailing and painting cars so they look like new. There are also people in the 'hood who make a living fixing up old or totaled cars and sell them on Buy Here, Pay Here lots in the low income areas. There is a string of them on the main road in those areas. Very nice looking luxury cars. To you they may look like very expensive high end cars, but a nicely painted 8 year old Benz, looks just like a brand new one, except it may have a salvage title.

I had wondered about this, but I actually looked into it by driving in the low income areas. I saw this in East St Louis, which is a very low income area.

I'd buy an expensive car because it looks and feels cool to me. Dont give a rats ass about impressing someone else in the neighbourhood.
