Bad idea. Stock Garands are very ammo sensitive. The wrong bullet weight or trying to shoot modern, full-power 30-06 rounds will destroy the op rod in short order. You can buy an adjustable gas plug, but I just load my own rounds to old military specs.

I have a really nice Winchester M1 Garand. One of my favorite rifles in my safe and it's very accurate.

The surplus ammo market in .308 is freaking horrible.

Slightly less than .50 per round is ridiculous.

but one of my brothers scored 12 from the Government (never been in private hands) and they are, apparently, in exceptional condition.

He's offered me a couple (I am considering 1) for $775 - *good deal or no?

That's a good deal if the rifle has at least a Service Grade barrel and had been re-worked to take modern 30-06 ammunition. If it's Field Grade you might think twice.

It's a wonderful and capable weapon and there is a wealth of info on them out there.
