[M4M] Cruiser grandpa tried to slap me on 880

Not really a problem I've ever had. I have found myself behind slower riders while splitting 1 and 2. If I see that they see me, but don't let me by I'll just move right and split 2 and 3 till I'm passed them. Then it's back between 1 and 2. No anger, no finger, no wave... I just go about my day. An extra 30 to 60 seconds isn't going to impact me. :dunno

Exactly! Unless there are only two lanes there are always other options. Better aikido rather than karate this situation.:thumbup

From reading his post I took him to mean that instead of saying nothing to dood and choosing instead to be an idle witness and then posting about it on barf he should've shared his disdain with old boy directly. I couldn't agree more. Out of curiosity what do you think he meant by "handling" it?

How exactly should he "share his disdain"? By giving him the bird, or yelling fuck you? That's about all you could do, because saying anything more would take too long, and pose a risk to you since your eyes should be on the road, not another rider.

Either way, it's not going to accomplish anything. Nobody's going to change their behavior because you gave them the bird.

Yes. Me having the amount of free time that a do. I have conversions with said individuals. You'd be surprised how a calm voice and demeanor can de escalate a situation. If there is no reasonig with them. You continue on your way. If they choose to become violent. Then you can pretend to see a "deadly weapon" in their hand and shoot them. Police do it all the time. Btw skynard rules.

I've done the whole :dunno or :shame or :facepalm
I'm a bit concerned that some of you read violence into it or that you default to do nothing or do something aggressive/violent .

I agree that it may not change their behavior, but saying/doing nothing will certainly not change it. Right?

I've practiced this in traffic and also on city streets. You'd be surprised how many times it ended with a fist bump or a handshake and apology from someone threading my life minutes earlier.

"Their research also suggests that conversely, highly skilled individuals may underestimate their relative competence, erroneously assuming that tasks that are easy for them also are easy for others."

Guilty as charged. Next lesson...

:facepalm No, the OTHER part !

:laughing :twofinger

It's just an example of the Dunning–Kruger effect on the Dunning–Kruger effect. BARFers never do things in half measures :laughing

Motorcycle riders :facepalm ... sheesh ! :laughing

Let's just say that I did handle it much in the same way that I'm handling this thread... stay cool and don't give a fuck about self-important dick-waving. :cool

I'll do the 2/3 split easily as well if I don't have time but I like to give slowpokes a chance to 'do the right thing' and scoot over when they see someone behind them, because only people with more ego than intelligence think that being in the lead makes you the better rider. Checking your mirror and then keeping your ass planted firmly in the gap is just plain discourteous. I like the lovetap CommuterGP idea but I've no need to compete, I just like to play in traffic the way my mother never told me not to.

Sorry to disappoint planegray, at least half of my name is real :party

Not really close enough to be rudely riding his ass, but not far back enough that he shouldn't have felt the pressure to move over. Commuters should know. When he jetted out I gave him some extra safety space of course, but was easily keeping up.

I used to get upset by things other people did. Now I will just go around them and ignore. The only thing I sometimes do is give left lane hoggers with tons of cars building up behind them the "you should move over" signal, but they never ever do.

I should note that if one doesn't yield to faster traffic, one cannot get upset when one is passed quickly on the right :)

He sounds like either a newb or someone who usually only pleasure-rides, and doesn't commute often. Thus explaining why he kept head-checking and getting mad at you for what he perceived to be tailgating.

Yeah, and to be clear, my intent in sharing this was purely to entertain and amuse - not vent, complain, bitch, moan, etc... can you believe this old guy actually took a swipe at me on my commute? Oh, the people you meet on the road...

Like you, HappyHighwayman, I'm very pleased that after my second year of riding I've never really 'seen red' and have always been able to maintain a calm, zen mind on the road, even in very-near-miss situations. One instance where the 'soft bigotry of low expectations' turns out to be a good thing.

BTW, I hear you can pass, even split, in other lanes besides Lane 1 and 2.

I tend to catch up then go by, before they notice I'm there. Then I just act like I never saw them at all and just motor on.
