Macys Union Square store is closing

Indoor malls went away for several reasons, like costs, but one was too much actual walking. Muricans want to drive right up to the door of each store. Have seen them drive between stores in the same strip. The upscale Corte Madera Macy’s prolly won’t close.

Worthy point. Upscaledness, = actually associated with driving to the door of the store.

That's why you're not going to see more of those "just normal well-dressed San Franciscans out on a walk shopping in downtown" pictures from the 50s

As an OG Sunset Boy, this sucks ass.

The Sunset is still the same. Outer Sunset is still the best neighborhood in the entire Bay Area to live in.

Too bad about Macy's though. Christmas in the Yay Area will never be the same.

I'm glad I took my kids there and got pictures with Union Square Christmas Macy's for their first Christmas in America. End of an era indeed.

saw this on reddit...

I change my story. I need it, I want it. Keep it open all year. Finally a place I can buy important home decor all year round.

It’s a shame for sure, same for the Nordstrom one at which I had a lovely dinner before going to a theater performance a few years ago. But that’s the gag....a few years ago. Same for our living room couch - bought that at the Macy’s in Valley Fair ages ago - and I have not been back since. Indeed at most I go inside an actual mall maybe once or twice a year. Retail has shifted tremendously (and I agree, not always for the best) but it seems it would take a major trend shift to return to the days of going to the mall for a movie or to shop or to hang out. As a former arcade and food court kid it’s definitely an end of an era.

I heard that Macy's won't be closing the store until they can sell the building. Can anyone corroborate?

Incorrect, homeboy.

You weren’t around when there was only one family living in one house - usually Italian or Irish - a front lawn, and driveway / street parking. And no Chinese / Burmese / Thai / Viet restaurants.

Happy your fam kept the house. Your family bought the house after the era when Asians weren’t allowed to buy property in the Sunset. My Chinese friend’s parents were told to shop elsewhere.

25th and ? You must have bought shin guards at The Flying Goose :love

Me: 40th and Taraval. My parents sold our house in ‘72 for $37K and we moved to WC. Once asked my old man if he considered keeping the Sunset house, he said he wanted to but couldn’t make it happen.

25th and Kirkham Parents bought in 1967 for $26,000. Old school SF shopping at GET on Sloat Blvd.,U.S.E. on Alemany, Derby jackets downtown, Christmas shopping at City of Paris or Gump's. Crap! Time does fly....

Pizza by the slice at GET’s :love

I currently own about 5-6 vintage Derby jackets.
