Scumbag's a little strong. Depends on which part of his life we're talking about, really.

Black nationalism has a few good things to be said for it -- a large part of what he advocated was just that they needed to buy and sell in their own communities and look after each other -- which beats waiting around for whitey to do it. Honestly, he was right, whitey attempting to help them out just makes things worse -- we've created a culture of dependence as a result.

Malcolm X was a lot righter than people are willing to give him credit for.

Because he was an American hating racist, a thief, a drug dealer, a segregationist and a devout preacher of a racially pure black nation in North America created by the use of violence against other Americans. The idea that he can even be elevated to the same conversation as a great American like Martin Luther King Jr. offends the shit out of me. The man believed only in burning bridges, not building them and I'm proud my uncle retired from the NYPD with a STACK of medals gained putting Malcolm's buddies behind bars. This man was not a hero, he was an unabashed advocate of hate.

He renounced all of that when he severed ties with NoI. What else do you have against him?

Although Malcolm later married and, as far as we know, abandoned sex with men, his earlier same-sex relations suggest that he was bisexual rather than heterosexual. Abstaining from gay sex after his marriage does not change the fundamentals of his sexual orientation and does not mean that he was wholly straight.

Not really. You do realize that he died less than a year after he renounced the Nation of Islam? The Afro American Unity league he founded AFTER he left NoI was decidedly racist. Not only would they not allow any white membership in their organization, in keeping with his long standing policy of segregationist beliefs, they had specific instructions not to accept donations from whites. There is no question that this organization is one of racist antagonism against people of another color that had very specific policy promoting a creation of boundaries between Americans. It is as everything else he ever did, a part of his legacy of hate.
