MCN test the 1098R

“Ducati is back to its decadent best with this homologation special which is the closest a road going Ducati has ever been to a World Superbike. As well as all the top spec cycle parts and hefty price tag of £24,000 the two main points of interest are its new 1200cc engine and its traction control, the first time such a system has ever been fitted to a road going motorcycle.
Why is it called a 1098 if it has a 1200cc engine?

you got me. All the new v-twins are cheater bikes anyway. oh boo hoo, my bike doesn't have the horsepower. Even though it has superior torque and powerband which gives me a distinct advantage on many tracks, I'm going to cry and bitch and moan. This is why I miss the Honda SP2, the last true homogolated 1 liter v-twin race bike.

The 1098 is not 1098 cc's. ;)

Why not call it the cc size it really is? If you ask nicely, I'll tell you...

My good sir Mr Dove, could you please explain why Ducati does not call a bike by its actuall cc? :teeth

Well, hello there kind sir. :wave I can answer your question but only with regards to the 1098 and 1098s.

1099 is a very depressing form for some in the United States. :|

This just in: $25,000 in improvements to your base-model sport bike improves its performance, handling and acceleration.

Next up, the sky is blue, water is wet, and heterosexual males are attracted to women...

What about the 999R?

dude, that's like asking why doesn't suzuki call the GSXR 1000 the GSXR 999, because it just doesn't sound right.

Plus, the 1099 is that very depressing US government issued form that is about to become very important, and nobody, especially a "hip" company like Ducati wants to be associated with. :nerd

That's not the reason!

Hmmm Well in MY opinion......I think a Ducati would be bad ass being called a 1099. It certainly would make ME feel better about the number. :ride

That's the model number.

Historically, Ducati has made homologation specials that were different from the model number.

There were 851's with 888cc engines.
There were 888's with 926 and 955cc engines.
There were 916's with 955 and 996cc engines.

Bravo mate! Note* Did everyone forget that the 999 (bar the 999r) displaced 998 c.c. :nerd

1098 family = love

I would not call them cheater bikes. The FIM rules proper to the technical/mechanical working of each configuration:nerd

The AMA organization needs to get on the ball so we can putt
a stop to this SUZUKI cup we having going on!!!

What we need, in my opinion, is for KTM, Aprilia, and BMW to all start racing twins in Superbike, and winning. I want to see the Japanese manufacturers forced to make some decent V-twin sport bikes. That would be the best of all outcomes. I wouldn't even mind seeing Honda beat Ducati again if they did it with a nice sounding V-twin. (Okay, maybe it would bother me a little.)

The afro mentioned factories do need to step it up! They leave Ducati to fight for change on their own and now with the change they start action (eemm RC8). Shame I say, sshhaammeee!!!

Had an SP-2 and loved it (most criticized it, if they knew what it was).
It does not impress on paper but then again I have never been a specs whore:x

Oh truth be told that Ducati Corse does not think a V-4 below the D16RR is
a bad idea... It's not like Ducatisti are starving for performance motorbikes, LOL!!!

AMA announced new rules for 1200 cc twins a couple weeks ago but it's way too late for the factory to put something together for this year.

Ducati is giving Larry Pegram some factory support on the 848 in Formula Extreme.

Thats what I hear... I hope Larry represents!!!

Interested in what American Honda will do this year! But goo Pegram!
