So I went to ride Mines rd for the first time today since no work for me. I gotta admit, a lot of turn outs and sweepers. And some of a "oh shit moment" due to some rocks on the middle of the road. Regardless, I had fun and just took my time.
So my question is, what would be the ideal speed on mines road if you're going on a moderate pace.

I was moinitoring the time, it took me 30ish minutes from south livermore rd. towards to the junction and coming back. And I know for sure that i was taking my time.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll go mines rd again and continue towards Del Puerto rd.

Ride on.....

Careful with that road it bites.

"And they call it a MINE?!..."

Speed limit is 45; Do not try to maintain that speed.

Now if you wanna go fast, hang a right at the end of Del Puerto :shhh

too many times have i had the rear come out on that road due to hidden gravel. enough for me to stay on the nice, clean roads of the SC mountains instead.

The distance from Livermore Ave./Tesla to The Junction is a hair under 28 miles. We can't get your official time because we had to take out the lap timers to replace failed units on teh 9.

Ok. I was just curious because in my opinion I dont think you can do a moderate pace on that road. Its scary.

Mines is one awesome, giant ride-thru penalty, but it's rad to try and go spirited pace.

The surface obviously sucks and the road somehow breeds "Oh siht" moments, but riding on Mines is like flexing a new set of muscles, skills wise.

Oh, and no bicycles !!!

A more serious response...

The ideal speed is different for every individual and is based on your skill level, how well you know the road, current conditions, your tolerance for risk, and probably a dozen other factors. If dirt in the road gives you the willies, slow down enough so you can see the dirt in time to adjust your line. Beware the blind right-handers, for large trucks hauling livestock lie in wait to take you out. If you're comfortable threading needles and good at maintaining focus, this isn't much in the way of drama. If you tend to freeze at moments like that, a much slower speed is recommended to compensate.

Some folks are quite comfortable running Mines at a blistering pace and do so without incident. But they're not you. Some folks try the blistering pace and yard sale their bike while earning the "helicopter ride" merit badge. Try really hard for this to not be you.

Your pace should be slower than the speed that makes you go "oh shit".

Edit: just noticed you've been around here since '08. Apologies if my response comes across as condescending - don't mean it that way at all. What I really mean to say is that it's just a road... different folks pace it differently

mines is a fun road, just mind the gravel on the right handers going in, roost on the water crossings and turn left at the junction to have more fun. it's been a while, but 30 minutes to go to the junction and back to livermore seems rather optimistic.

sections of mines can be run comfortably at a moderate pace, some sections are best done at an easy pace. Mines has some surprise reducing radius corners and some sections that tend to get dirty or wet, not to mention the blind corners in sections that are barely a lane wide.

am I the only one who's Mines "oh shite" moment included Bambi & his momma crossing the road in front of me?

I tried to keep up with some chick on Mines Rd. It was fun until my front brakes burned up halfway to the junction. :laughing

I'm not sure what section of Mines you're talking about that's barely a lane wide. A good bit of it doesn't have a center line, but the pavement itself is pretty wide, definitely enough for two full lanes. "Barely a lane wide" means that if two cars come head-to-head, they need to stop and inch off onto the shoulder...

I could be wrong, I wanna say it was more like 40-45 minutes.
But yes, some right handers had gravel and felt my rear tire slid. Luckily was not going fast and was able to save it.

How many squirrels did you kill?
