I am thinking about a bike mostly for training /drills in parking lot around cones.

stuff like this: https://youtu.be/cK-LdhAVh1U

Kx/rm 65 with 12" x 2.50 wheels and minimoto tires was recommended. It seems ktm 65 is the only other manufaturer in that class. If 80/85's are viable, that's a much bigger pool of bikes to choose from. A low maintanance 4t is also appealing to me.

Help me pick one(or a few suitable models that I can look for). I won't be getting 17" wheels .. only 12" wheels and will keep the rest of the bike as stock as possible. No other mods unless they are really necessary.

Performance or usability on track is not a concern. cheapest to buy and maintain is a huge plus. I will continue to use my crf230 for laps on the track.

2T: kx/rm 65, cr/yz/rm/kx 85/80

4t: crf/xr 80 or 100, klx 110, ttr 90 etc

so what's ideal???

I am 5'11" and 200 lbs and not very flexible or fit if it matters.

Thanks in advance.

p.s.: not sure if this thread belongs here or in the mini forum

XR/CRF100 is the bike pretty much every road racer trained on. Reliable; takes a beating; big aftermarket and used parts market. No problem finding decent used XR/CRF100s.

The KLX110 is really small and low power (even among these bikes). Its for kids or small adults. I'm your size and wouldn't recommend it. I'm not sure it would be useful for the type of training you have in mind.

Those little two strokes are cool bikes but have MX power bands which may not be the easiest for that drill.

Thanks for replying Steve.

The kx65 is what the person coaching me preferred. A friend of mine got one already and I got to try it and it worked well. The peaky powerband wasn't yet an issue for the drill I have done so far (pretty much all constant throttle , kind staying below the powerband).

But xr/crf 100 sounds good to me due to the "maintenance free" nature of that bike. I'll keep an eye out for that now.

I was hoping to hear the 85's works for this since I see plenty of those on Cl.

btw the kx65 was wicked when I rode it on the track. As it get's into the power band , the front simply comes up. scary ha ha. It was stressful avoiding whiskey throttle. So much attention had to be diverted to managing that. But then again I only rode it for a few laps, so not enough time to get used to it...

I personally would recommend the KTM 990 SMR. Great little starter platform for dragging knee in parking lots, etc.

:laughing

Man...u rocked that thing well. I wish I could ride a lighter bike half as well. ha ha ..

:teeth:laughing:rofl

See you out there again soon.

On the XR100, I've been reading you basically swap out the front rim for a 16 and you are done, is that about right?

That appears to be popular for track riding.

I got to spent some more time on my friend's kx65 today. Can't wait to get my own. Deal hunting on kx65 or xr100 has started :)

I'd prefer a KX65 over the xr100. Disc brakes vs nasty old drums.
Those 65's haul ass too! I got my butt handed to me yesterday by a bunch of 65's down in SoCal.

I cannot be trusted with a 65 though... already have proven that it is indeed possible to highside my TTR like a boss. The last thing I need is a peaky little rocket.

I rode my friends kx around the track a few laps. I was super nervous haha. That thing wheelies way too easily.

Got me a RM65 today :teeth

What that run you?

Paid $600.

Bike is a little beat up. But registration was current and I was planning to go through the bike regardless of apparent condition. so a cheaper beat up bike fits the bill better than a nicer bike at more $$.

Blown shock, missing exhaust end cap, no brake lever, unknown hours/condition on engine, carbs need attention. Atleast it started and runs.
