More Time To Get Fit - 2025

Weight on a scale can be misleady, especially when getting back into shape.
You will have more mass with muscle early, then as those muscles get more fit, their weight will drop as they get more efficient.
You will lose much more fat with cardio, but it depends on the level you're going. Aerobic pace will burn fat but anaerobic pace with burn carbs.

so keep reading my HR zone 1 is the fat burning zone. is this wrong? i get that, ideally, my workout will have me in a few hr zones. but it seemed like my walking (zone 1, 2 and 3 when going up a steep hill) was pretty effective at helping me shed lbs.

Do you run a wearable that tells you total calories burned for a workout?

That's a good in-workout measurement, IMO.
i used one of the present interval modes. i love having the machine tell me “row harder!”

i present data!

The fact that she didn't start until she was 60 is what I hope anyone out there on the fence about making changes takes to heart. IT. IS. NEVER. TOO. LATE.

FatMax HR is likely somewhere in Z2 for Apple’s HR zones. But that may not matter all that much.

The avg person will probably use less than 20% fat calories directly during that exercise. That’s not a lot of fat calories and will take forever to add up. However if you run your diet at a deficit, your body will be forced to use more fat calories after the exercise to make up for the lack of sugar calories. This is why everyone says things like “weight loss happens in the kitchen”.

The primary benefits of HR Z2 are fatigue related. You should be able to do Z2 for a very long time. 2hr in Z2 is a lot more calories overall than 30min in Z3. And the Z2 work will be easier to recover from and would allow you to exercise the next day. Z3 work will cause much more fatigue and require more rest days, which is fewer calories used for the week.

Oh, and diff intensities of exercise will affect appetite differently. Z3-4 work definitely increase my appetite, which would make it harder to run a diet deficit. Z1-2 does not do this for me nearly as much.

Prob more info than necessary. I like understanding the nitty gritty of all this stuff.

i appreciate this! i’m working up to more time on both the rower and the stumpie.

i know i need to stop eating like a trash panda. :cry it really did help when i was able to burn more calories bc that’s pretty much my default mode.

anyhoo, the wheel support for the stumpie made a big difference. i put on “street worms” and did 20 minutes there then did a 20 minute gentle yoga session based on a youtube video.

i am tense as heck. that stretching did me so much good.

editing to add pics of the bike my friend is building me as a proper touring bike. (i don’t do drop bars. too many bicycle crashes/getting bucked off horses and hurting my shoulders as a kid).

it is a Vassago “Fisticuff” and i’m super excited about it.

I've always liked Vassago's bikes.
i am seriously excited. i’ve never had one.

the person building it is the same person who, along with his wife, housed me for a month and drove me to medical appointments in sf from their home in placerville. i couldn’t ask for better people in my life. 🥹

Sounds like great people/friends.

@Ridley they are the best.

I rode 6.35 miles today which is the farthest single ride yet. went further up one road than i have ever been on a bike before and did laps of others. was ALL over the heart rate zones but feel really great. i am using gears 2 and 3 way more than before. (it is a three speed bike)

total outdoor pedaling miles YTD 41.02.

Those are REAL friends. I found out years ago that you don't really know who your real friends are until you go through a bad spell, then you find out.

There's a good reason for the term Fair Weather Friends.

Glad to see you still aggressively taking care of your health and working hard to improve! :thumbup

The only thing better than leg day is leg day after a 2 week hiatus from the gym. I am so hunched over ready to start screaming get off my lawn.

been super lazy lately and haven't looked for a good crossfit style workout so went back to default of straight lifts. hope to rectify that this week.

House has slowly emptied and it looks like it might be time to sign up for a meal delivery service which would make dinner time portioning much easier. Anybody use one that has a good selection/variety of meals preferably with not a lot of seafood meals.

i am on a mission to rid my self of 30 lbs of useless mass by May by adding muscle, improving my cardiovascular health, and not eating like a trash panda.

all in the name of being able to go faster harder longer by whatever means i am using to move my body.

and yes: they are rockstar friends who i adore. i dont know why they put up with me.

My 2wk vacation meant two weeks away from lifting. I did a medium RPE5 workout at the gym yesterday... and I'm f'ing sore today. UGH. Apparently I pushed the single leg deadlifts too much with 50#. Single leg squat with 70# was ok though. The grind never ends.

Aside from that, the 3.5 days of bike touring and week of walking/hiking gave my legs a nice break. I even stretched consistently and opened up my hips a bit. The 16hrs of flying on the way back didn't bother my back one bit.
