moto camping gear

Me too. Gotta play with the new stuff...I justify it to myself by seam-sealing the tent in the yard.

This. I have 6 North Face Tents, one Mtn Hardware tent and a couple of Eurekas that ALL needed to be sealed when brand new.

Aaron-

Eureka makes a killer tent for a little $$. You get a big bang for your buck.

If you want to see how to operate a good gas stove, come on over and I'll show you my MSR Dragonfly. It rocks. There are simpler styles too, that are much easier to operate.

aaron, here's a tent you wont mind climbing into again and again

I've been using the same shit for years. I could probably get some things newer and smaller, but why spend a tone of dough when what you already have works fine. when something breaks I replace it. Mt tent is a North Face Tree Frog 2-person. It's big enough for me and pretty light. Make sure you get a pad for under your sleeping bag!

How many of these objects can you identify?

Nah. Doesn't everyone? I set up all my gear before taking it on the road. Usually the day I get it. That way I can look for any problems, reasons to get something else etc. :laughing

+1 :thumbup

I'm OCD when it comes to checking my gear (MOTO, camping, windsurfing, cycling). There is noting worse that a maintenance based equipment failure or forgetting to bring a key component to ruin you day when you are 4hrs away from help.

Okay after a few hours of web searching, e-window shopping and YouTube videos I've come up with a few things for the "To buy list"

1. Jet boil SOL aluminum
2. Klymit inertia XL

Something I found that looked really neat:

Still undecided on sleeping bag and tent.

I'm happy with this Catoma tent 1.5 person moto tent:

packs up like this on my bike (the brown rolled bag below the silver dry bag) :

I use a sierra designs two person tent. It's a little heavy, but this isn't backpacking. Weight isn't really a consideration (within reason). Check out this other guy's setup from my camping trip last week. You can push a huge bike right into the "garage".

Jet boils are great. I haven't touched my MSR in years. but if I'm only going for a day or two I just eat cold packaged food or in restaurants.

My moto tent is a Kelty Grand Mesa 2. Specs compare favorably with higher priced tents. 4 pounds, packs to 20x7 inches. Check Amazon and Campmor for better prices.

I got burned out on liquid fuel stoves, they don't last and are finicky. Coleman has a single burner stove that screws on top of a standard small propane canister... you can do real cooking on it, not just boiling water. EDIT: Propane cylinders are a bit heavier and bulkier than the little butane thingies, but they last longer and work in lower temperatures.

I guess that I got lucky, cause Ive had this stove for over 20 yrs with no problems.

I just got a sleeping bag, self inflating pad, and a great tent from Overstock.com. I think they are from ALPS, very good quality, light and compact and best part is all of this was less than $200!

I found a used-once Alps Mountaineering Extreme tent on advrider. Just tried it for camping this weekend, and while not as well built as the old Sierra Designs Night Watch it replaced, it was a solid value. Good tent for 2 people, once the floor seams are sealed.

I also have a Thermarest pad, a knockoff REI brand inflatable pad, and a pair of REI down mummy sleeping bags with silk liners. I like my MSR multi-fuel stove, but that biofuel stove looks way cool for camping in places with wood.

Good to know. What kind? I went through 2 Coleman 2-burner liquid fuel stoves in 4-5 years.

Nice. What do you use to seal the seams? I like that idea 'cause I don't take a ground cover for moto camping.

Rod, its a COLEMAN FEATHERWEIGHT 400 single burner. Im sure that it hasnt been made for a while.

Im pretty happy with my setup, EXCEPT my camp coffee. Its weak sauce! I use the style that makes 1 cup at a time, and you put the grounds in a filtered bottom cup.

Any ideas?

French press is popular. We use these things, at home and camping, made by Elfo:

Ya, I use something very similar, but its still not near as good as at home.

Aaron, don't forget to use my REI member number when you order something! I could use the dividends, lol

Collapsible rubber filter cone and regular filters. Grind all your beans before you go. Not 100% as fresh as home, but when you wake up in the woods you won't care. I drink mine black, but you can use Coffee Mate, powdered milk, or canned evaporated if you just gotta have the leche.

When I wake up in the woods I prefer a Bloody Mary, no stove required.
