So here's a random question... Seeing Nicky always sporting his Oakley MP3 sunglasses all the time, it made me wonder if a racer could listen to music while racing if he wanted to. Now I recognize that it may not be the best for racing results, but are there rules against it? In GP? In AMA? AFM? Just curious...

i always wondered too..But i think they need to communicate with pits??....lets see who knows?

Racing is a pretty intense sport, mentally. I don't think any rider would want to be distracted by music during a race.

Calling Motoliam!!!!

I seem to recall that listening to music got someone into the zone and enabled him to take his riding to the next level. Or some shit.

Well, there's no electronic communication allowed between riders and their crew, so that rules that one out. I'd bet that there's no rule against listening to music while racing but I'd also bet that it's never come up because it's a stupid idea.

FIM Rules:

Nothing in the rules specifically prohibits it, but the safety officials have plenty of discretion to bar unsafe conditions like that.

There is a moto-journo I know who would be listening to his iPod at every press intro I went to. At the Buell 2007 product intro (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufactu...-and-an-xbrr-buells-in-bakersfield-14289.html) I saw him putting his earphones in--getting ready to ride on the track at Buttonwillow! "Hey," I said, "don't ever let anybody see you wear those things at a press intro, especially not at a trackday!" He blew me off.

Not long after, disaster struck when he crashed at Laguna during the R1 press intro. Was he wearing his headphones? I think yes.

Anyway, here are the FIM rules regulating equipment:

2.12 Protective Clothing and Helmets
2.12.1 Riders must wear a complete leather suit with additional leather
padding or other protection on the principal contact points, knees,
elbows, shoulders, hips etc.
2.12.2 Linings or undergarments must not be made of a synthetic material
which might melt and cause damage to the riders' skin.
2.12.3 Riders must also wear leather gloves and boots, which with the suit
provides complete coverage from the neck down.
2.12.4 Leather substitute materials may be used, providing they have been
checked by the Chief Technical Scrutineer.
2.12.5 Use of a back protector is highly recommended.
2.12.6 Riders must wear a helmet which is in good condition, provides a
good fit and is properly fastened.
2.12.7 Helmets must be of the full face type and conform to one of the
recognised international standards:
• Europe ECE 22-05 ‘P’
• Japan JIS T 8133 : 2000
• USA SNELL M 2005
62
2.12.8 Visors must be made of a shatterproof material.
2.12.9 Disposable "tear-offs" are permitted.
2.12.10 Any question concerning the suitability or condition of the riders
clothing and/or helmet shall be decided by the Technical Director, who
may, if he so wishes, consult with the manufacturers of the product
before making a final decision.

Good luck hearing the music with how loud those things are. But on DTK I think one of them listens to loud music on a stationery bike to warm up for a race

Apparently it's legal but so is sticking firecrackers up your butt (provided you live in an area where firecrackers are legal). :rolleyes

In other words, there seems to be no rule specifically against it but it's such a bad idea that there really needn't be such a rule.

And sticking firecrackers up your butt would be bad because....?
:twofinger

I would think the riders would need to listen to the bike. and if you had a desmodronic v-4 thats all the soundtrack you need!!!

i forgot to put in my earplugs a trackday one session and i thought that was loud... do they make headphones that will play loud enough to drone out a GP bike at redline?? and is that possible w/out rupturing ure eardrums?

even if it is legal, id bet any safety commission would put at stop to it. hell, ud prob get hounded off the track by the other riders.

^^^ Yes, they make in-ear headphones that you'd be able to hear in loud environments. Buy any higher end 'phones that seal the ear canal like a pair of ear plugs, and you'll see that you don't have to crank the music so loud to hear, as they seal out a lot of the outside world.

This is one of those things where they don't have to bother making a rule for it, 'cause no one would do this. Even if they could get that unprovable extra 1% zen-buddha-monk-ness out of the music, they'd look unprofessional as hell. Hundreds of people rely on them to ride under pressure when it counts. No one wants to screw that up.
