Yes, it's the Harley's fault. It's not the XR400s with open pipes that put short stacks on a Dyna to shame. It's not the plethora of sport bikes with custom exhausts. Or the bozos that insist on checking that the rev limiter is still functioning properly... 18 times in a 3 minute period.
Nope, it wouldn't be those people. Just those Harleys.
It is, seriously. I've never heard a particularly loud XR400 on the road. I'm trying to imagine how it could POSSIBLY be as loud as the average Harley.
A couple of years ago, I was out riding on highway 25, and some tards on sprotbiles were bouncing their engines off the rev limiter in neutral before they left the service station. They were douche canoes, for sure. That's the ONE time I ever remember hearing that, other than, I don't know, Cannery Row during the races?
The average sprotbile, even with a loud-ass exhaust, simply isn't that loud unless they're at WOT and way up in the rev range.
The goddamn straight pipe Harleys are loud, ALL THE FUCKING TIME, and the operators insist on running them WOT *all the fucking time*.
It's not to suggest that there aren't obnoxious sprotbilers, but it's simply asinine to pretend like the Harleys aren't easily 95% of the noise problem when it comes to motorcycles. It's absolutely ignorant of the reality on the roads.
And yeah, I've been to the summit of Mt Ham plenty of times, and I see a good mix of cruisers, dirtbikes, and sportbikes up there. Again, never heard a sportbike revving the piss out of its engine there, but heard plenty of loud Harleys. The sound pressure generated by those things are absolutely asinine. I think noise is the primary function of the engine, and a little bit of forward momentum is simply a byproduct.
