My coworkers hate where I park my motorcycle. What would you do?

1) I do not want to deal with receiving a ticket,
2) the parking spots are on a first come first serve basis,
3) if I wasn't driving my motorcycle I would be driving my car and that would take a parking spot anyway (I am not taking away any parking spots that wouldn't already be used). Also, there are no areas marked for motorcycle parking only, so there isn't really anyplace else for me to legally park.

4) I would park in the no parking area if they would pay my parking tickets (if received), but as you can guess, nobody has taken that offer...

What would you say/do?

If you've already told them 1-3, then said 4 with no takers, you've done all you can do in relation to the complainers.

The only other thing you can do is talk to your manager (and/or the owner of the building) and see what they recommend.
I think if it's private property, you won't get a ticket unless the building's owner or representative complains.

While I like the idea of talking to the building owner for moto parking, nobody suggested the other obvious thing (unless I missed it), which park in the back, or the space furthest from the door (meaning find the least desirable space and park there).

I suspect what is really irking them is that you are getting the good space ya know, even if they aren't saying it.

The reason they are suggesting using the no parking area is they figure you want to be right by the door just like they do. You are the junior guy, and taking the best parking spot, which is inappropriate in many people's way of thinking.

Put another way, people can be very petty, fighting over parking spaces and who has the biggest cube and office space. You are the junior guy, and are taking the best parking spot, imagine if you did that with an office or cube? Switch to the worst spot as is befitting the lowest seniority person and I bet your problems will go away.

Park it in the lobby.

I used to ride my bike into the courtyard and park right by our company's front door. I had the management's ok and the idea was to not take up spaces that were already at a premium...that and I could have visual out of my office window.

Sure enough some CEO broad from upstairs complained to the property mgmt.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

No way. If people are complaining it's because they're coming in to work too late to find any spot at all. They want to bitch about it and vent their frustration. The motorcycle is just the easy target.

OP, do not inconvenience yourself for some crybaby, unless the crybaby is hot. Parking far away from the door is not a courtesy to anyone, so don't bother.

It's not your fault their terrible vehicles are too large to share the spot with you. Tell them to ride a motorcycle if they want to use the space.

Disagrees with this post. Junior guy or not, this is not named parking.

he doesn't get to pick and office or cube, they are assigned.

Tell them that if they got there earlier than you that they can park in that spot then.

"If you get here earlier than me, you can park there."

Is it a nice shady spot? (if we talked about parking spots like women ("is she hot?"))

Personally, I get to park in my warehouse...it frees up more spaces for everybody else...and it's air-conditioned.

Otherwise, I park in a spot that doesn't have enough shade for a car, but enough for my motorcycle.

Since you can park in any legal spot, tell them to get the building manager to create a motorcycle only parking area.

Then park in that same spot and they can STFU until this special area is made.

There is that too. When I start a new job, even with a big title and high rank, I buy a few rounds of Friday happy hour, take people out for lunch, get them coffee, etc, and definitely I don't take the best parking spot, nor laugh too loud, nor turn the heater up or down, etc. It's all a rite of passage, if you will. Food for thought.

BTW, congrats on the new job! What is it?

Seriously, if you get there so early that you're the first one there, you deserve that spot.

If this happened to me I would just be like :wtf

Then I'd karate chop one of their heads off to teach the rest of 'em a lesson.

I started a new job a few months back and I've been riding my motorcycle to work pretty much every day. It is really convenient for me because 1) HOV lane access gets me to work in about 15 min vs the 30-45min it takes in a car, 2) I save money on gas, 3) Less wear and tear on my car, 4) maybe this should be #1 - it's fun!

The 'problem':
I arrive at work at approx 8am when the parking lot is nearly empty and I park in a parking spot near the door. After about 9am parking can be a little more difficult... If you arrive late or leave and come back, there are no available spots and you have to park near the next building, or further (parking is free in each of these locations). It has now become quite common for someone to approach me and ask me why I parked in a spot for a car. They tell me I can park in the areas which are clearly marked "No Parking." I do not park in those areas because 1) I do not want to deal with receiving a ticket, 2) the parking spots are on a first come first serve basis, 3) if I wasn't driving my motorcycle I would be driving my car and that would take a parking spot anyway (I am not taking away any parking spots that wouldn't already be used). Also, there are no areas marked for motorcycle parking only, so there isn't really anyplace else for me to legally park.

The solution?:
I'm sure most of you are going to tell me to tell them to fuck off, but ideally I'd like to keep the peace somewhat. I really like my new job and like everyone I work with, I just wish they would understand that I deserve a spot just as much as they do. I offered a solution - I would park in the no parking area if they would pay my parking tickets (if received), but as you can guess, nobody has taken that offer...

What would you say/do?

Who is going to be giving you a ticket? This is a private parking lot for a commercial building, isn't it? The No parking may very well mean no parking for a car sized vehicle.

Taking up a parking spot, for a car, and one close to the entrance to boot, is not going to keep the peace in one piece.

Take it up with the Management first..ask them if you can park in a no Parking spot, with your bike, so your not pissing off the other workers.

Course management might not give you a straight answer...but Ya don't know, unless you ask.

Tell them they need the exercise and should park down the street.

I would probably just say I was towed last week and it cost me $600 to get it back.

Tell'em they need the exercise.

Some people are so lazy, inconsiderate, it's all about me morons and as such need to be treated the same way.

Now, if there is any problems from the whiners, call harassment to HR and see what happens. And no you are being a trouble maker. The ones creating a hostile work environment are the bad guys. Drop the "hostile work" phrase to HR too. They hate to hear those two words and especially in a formal complaint cause it is on the record, put's them on notice something is wrong.

Nice never works with morons.

I just read through the other posts...Wow. What type of workers are we talking about here?

Office workers or factory workers? Replying to an office worker with "I got here first, I deserve the spot" or some such reply, might not have reprercussions, but try that at a factory...and don't expect that your tires will have air in them, and your paint job will be as it was when you left the bike, when you come off shift.

Kinda like Prison, there are two sets of rules..one is the Prisons rules, and the other is the prisoners rules.

Park it in their ass.

From your description, it seems your coworkers are childish and immature. You are probably not the first person they pulled their "act" on.

Try educating them that you have to obey parking laws like every other vehicle and you have to park in the designated areas, which are all car sized.

If they continue bothering you go straight to HR and/or your boss and report their harassment, and that you explained to them that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, parking legally. Ask for/offer alternatives to show you aren't just complaining, but willing to compromise, asking for assigned motorcycle parking is a good alternative.

If you park in the no parking area, some guy will get pissed you are taking up space cars can't park in, then call it in. Hosed if you do, hosed if you don't.

Mm..in the cager's perspective, the lot is fulled..

Wait! I seeee a parking spot!

Drove over and realized..

Uhh there's a motorcycle sitting there! False hope :laughing

Worst case scenario..the hates start growing and then..one day..bike laying on the ground after work :thumbdown

Good thing I have no plastics :)
