Apples have one of the highest return per acre of any tree crop. Cosmic Crisp was developed by WSU and resulted in huge lawsuits related to patent infringement, marketing arraignments, etc.
New "club" varieties of apples have variety royalties that are charged to the grower when they purchase the trees. Some of these varieties also restrict who you can sell your crop to: ie only Billy Bob's packing shed, etc.
Apples can have 2 to 4 times the number of sprays as almonds depending on variety and growing region.

Now, how about them apples?

BTW 1 out of 2 apples grown in Brazil are Fuji's.
